Statute of limitations?

I guess that I am a little confused. If the police back in 2002/2003 said that anything that may have happened between Bernie and his two accusors can no longer be prosecuted because of the statue of limitations, then why are they now proceeding with the investigation? Do they suspect more recent crimes that are prosecutable? If they have evidence that he did molest the two guys but again the statute applies can they use that evidence to get a search warrant? Can they us accusations alone to get a warrant? I can understand private parties (the university or media types) proceeding for civil purposes but why law inforcement? Does federal jurisdiction apply because of the travel to tournys may have taken place? Is Federal statute of limitations longer? Please no guesses, just real knowledge.
