Went to the Albany area Coaches vs Cancer event last night where they were honoring Steve Lavin. Unfortunately due to his recent prostate cancer surgery, he was unable to attend. Very sad and hopefully he has a full recovery. Fortunately Gene Keady came instead and did a fine job accepting the award for Steve Lavin. Keady seems like a real nice guy who gave Lavin his first job out of college and is very close to him. They talked a lot about all of the recent coaches who have taken ill from these diseases and it seems incredible and such an amazing coincidence on how the coaches have rallied around these causes ever since Jim Valvano passed away. There was a nice turnout of around 300 folks which for Albany on a Wednesday night is pretty good. The organizers did a great job with the open bar and great food, but I will not even attempt to pull a Tomcat and start to describe all of the great options there were from the hors d'oervres to the real food to the desserts. Let's just say its nice to go to an event where they serve Grey Goose. Anyways, Keady said that he is hoping that Lavin will be back behind the bench in a couple weeks, so I guess we should all wish him well.
