STOP-DWI Final: CTK vs Neumann Goretti

Hey Francis, you got an opinion on Newton as a player?

I don't know much about his game, but always like a 6-3 point guard
Big fan of Newton. Here goes a quick evaluation of him that I wrote back on the scout board over the summer when I last saw him play.

Newton is about 6'3 with a slim wiry frame. One of the best young scorers that I have seen so far. Quick with the ball and able to do whatever he wants without forcing the action. Routinely broke his man down off the dribble all game and scored mostly by driving into the lane and knocking down floaters. Didn't shoot any 3's or long jumpers, so I couldn't get a good read in that department. Struggled on D due to lack of strength but that should improve as he gets older.

Awesome, thanks for that.

I would think Cuse would have a good shot at getting him if they wanted...he goes to the same high school that Scoop & Rick attended, right? He must have watched them play a little or at least heard how well they are doing/did here at Cuse. Plus, we seem to be recruiting really well in Philly (Scoop, Rick, Waiters, Christmas). Throw in the rapper from Philly that rapped at midnight madness repping Cuse and I would think that's a lot of good connections.

Thanks for the report. I will keep a close eye on him tonight, especially his outside shooting

Here were my thoughts on the game. Goretti took this game over in the third quarter and blew them out. This Billy Shank kid was the most amazing. He stole the show with his dribbling and deep shooting. Drew the most cheers and ohs and ahs from the crowd.

I watched Newton closely as SU was watching him the day before. Did not see any assistants in the building for the final. Francis assessment was spot on. The whole game he was driving to the rim, which seemed to come at ease. He had 8 points total on 2 baskets and 4-6 from the line. He was probably 2-11 from the field, with about eight misses at the rim, which he got to pretty easily. Just could not get any to drop. He could have finished with 18 points easy. His fouls shots were due to driving. Since he was all drive, he had a couple to's on trying too hard to get to the rim, and had a charge call on one. Also with his driving, he had many nice drive and dish passes to open team mates. He finished with 8 assists. I wanted to see his outside shot. He only took one, a missed 8 foot baseline jumper. Even with this lone jumper, he hesitated to see if he could drive first before he shot.

His defense, I thought was decent. The whole first half, he went man 2 man guarding Calhoun and I thought he did good against him. Calhoun was guarding him in the first half also. Newton drove by him a couple times. Second half they were not on each other that much.

As for Calhoun, when the game was close in the first half, Calhoun was not taking over the game which I was expecting. He kind of stood around alot, but when he was active, he was pretty smooth. Nice outside shot. 2'nd half he shot more and missed quite a few while trying to play catch up. He finished with 10pts on 3-17 shooting.

Good stuff, thanks. How does Newton look strength wise at this point?

Will be interesting to see which direction SU goes for the future PG (after MCW). SU is said to be in the mix for Tyler Ennis '13, Newton '14, and Briscoe '15 all are prime talents.

Still looked thin and he definately needs to get stronger. Lets see how he developes.
