Orange Offensive Outburst Opens Season With 6-0 Win Over UMass

Next Game:

at Providence

8/23/2015 - 1 pm

AMHERST, Mass.- The Syracuse women's soccer team poured it on offensively in its 2015 season opener, beating Massachusetts by a final score of 6-0 win, as five different Orange found the back of the net on Friday afternoon.

Graduate student Alexis Koval and senior Maya Pitts led the offensive charge for Syracuse, registering half of the Orange goals against the Minutewomen. Koval scored twice and dished out an assist as Pitts tallied a goal and two assists. Today's 6-0 win is the most lopsided win for Syracuse since 2002 when the Orange beat Robert Morris by a final score of 8-2.

Juniors Stephanie Skilton and Alex Lamontagne as well as sophomore Sheridan Street also got in on the offensive action, registering one goal each in the 6-0 rout of UMass.

"We were dynamic in attack from start to finish today," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We did our best to press a big, physical UMass defense and I would say the goals we scored were a direct reflection of our hard work at practice."

Syracuse took 16 total shots offensively against the Minutewomen, placing 11 of them on goal.

Sophomore Courtney Brosnan picked up her third career clean sheet in net for the Orange, securing three saves on nine total shots.

The Orange opened up the scoring in the 10th minute as Koval beat UMass goalkeeper Danielle Kriscenski for the game's first goal. Seniors Jackie Firenze and Pitts set up the play, allowing Koval to blast it home, making it 1-0.

It took another 12 minutes for the Orange to extend their lead to two when Skilton received a pass from senior Erin Simon, burying it past Kriscenski to put Syracuse up 2-0 in the 22nd minute. Only two minutes later, the Orange now saw their lead at 3-0 as Street accepted a pass from sophomore Jessica Vigna inside the box, volleying and striking it beautifully for the goal.

Headed into halftime, Syracuse controlled a comfortable 3-0 lead, but the scoring would not end there.

Lamontagne picked up the Orange scoring in the second half, finishing for her first goal of the season off the second assist of the day from Pitts, coming in the 59th minute. With Syracuse holding a commanding 4-0 lead, the scoring would still continue.

Koval made it 5-0 in favor of Syracuse after connecting on a penalty kick in the 69th minute. Pitts then increased the lead to six as Lamontagne and Koval set her up for the game's final goal in the 82nd minute.

"This win is a great start to our season when you score goals like that on top of securing a shutout," Wheddon said. "In 48 hours, we have to recover and get ready for a strong Providence team."

The Orange will travel to take on Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats are available via Cuse.com.
