Men's Soccer SU at Duke (0-2): Fri Sept 19, 7 PM

They can't score goals but yet another game of very poor defending. They have 0 at large hopes and it's not even October. A program that won a national championship should not get worse every year after.

The team looks flat, lackadaisical, and without a plan. They looked much better earlier in the year. Now, they don't value possession, make sloppy passes, and are out of position on offense and defense. Some of this can be fixed. I'm also questioning the talent but a lot of this is basic fundamentals

My low-level amateur take is that the team was at its best when it had time to develop and incorporate new pieces over time. In this new era of plug and play, I'm not sure if the former recipe for success will be possible.

There is less talent than 2022 (duh) and no goal scorers and nobody to control and direct the midfield. That is what we are seeing.

The championship team was older and more seasoned but it was driven by two amazing goal scoring forwards who were transfers in their first and then only years with the team. Bad luck or not enough luck in the portal since then? NIL?

It is a young team. Let them grow, hope they stay and get lucky again in the portal. Disappointing for fans this year? Yes, but support the team, cheer them on.

The point is you should have used the championship to replenish that type of goal scorer either in the portal or through recruiting. If you can't use a literal national championship to get good players then idk what we're doing here. Does not mean the coach needs replacing, he's one of the best, but you can question what's going on.

Okay, a guy named Thomas Wadas has 2 goals and 2 assists for UMass. He is a freshman mid fielder.
Why do I bring him up? A few years ago, I ran in to Greg Kolodziey. He is the single season scorer leader for the Orange, He coaches Ludlow High. Probably the best soccer program in the state of Mass. Greg has won at least 4 or 5 D-1 State titles. He says I have a kid that is great. All state as a soph. I am going to push him to Syracuse. Anyway, he went to the Syracuse camp. He was all state 3 times. I went to watch him play in high school and talked to the Longmeadow Coach before the game. He coached Jay Heaps who won the Herman award at Duke. He said to me that Wadas kid is great. Anyway, Ian wasn't interested. Wadas went to the Umass camp and they and I'm not kidding, offered him a ship 10 minutes after he arrived. As a frosh, he starts and almost never comes out. They don't play our schedule of course but he does have 2 goals and 2 assists. I am going to spend this year watching this kids stats. By the way, Wadas has never got any grade other than an A in his entire life.

Unfortunately a situation not unique to Cuse soccer. I've had to watch my beloved St. Lawrence program go through quite literally the exact same thing.

We're not reinventing the wheel here, a good program stays good because they honor legacy and established pipelines.
