I decided to look up how many times Syracuse football and basketball had games on the same day. It’s mostly in recent decades as schedules used to be shorter and there wasn’t too much over-lap in the old days. Most of these games are forgettable but some of these ‘doubleheaders’ are quite memorable. And some of them are so long ago even I can’t remember them. I don’t recall both games being on at the same time before. The order in which they were played on these games I don’t know but in most cases I would think the basketball game was played at night so I’ll list them second. There are four occasions when we got swept, three in recent years and one was one of those memorable “from the mists of time”.
12/2/50: FB lost to Fordham 6-13. BB beat Toronto 101-39.
12/5/59: FB whipped UCLA 36-8 to clinch the national championship, (no bowls after polls then). BB crushed Clarkson 85-49
12/8/62: FB again beat UCLA 12-7 but basketball lost to Penn State 54-67 in Fred Lewis’ second game.
12/7/68: This time FB lost to Penn State 12-30 (Joe Paterno’s first great team) while the basketball team gave up 68 points to Calvin Murphy in a 110-118 loss.
12/4/71 FB meat U of Miami 14-0. BB beat Army 91-77.
11/29/75 FB lost a chance at a bowl game losing to Rutgers 10-21 while BB beat Harvard 83-70.
11/25/78 FB lost to U of Miami 9-21 but BB whipped Whitter 115-66.
12/15/79 Frank Maloney won his only bowl game over McNeese State 31-7 while BB beat Penn State 85-71.
11/23/85 FB beat Rutgers 31-14. BB beat Utica 102-55
11/21/87 In the most famous doubleheader BB lost the “Tip-off Classic” to North Carolina in OT 93-96 in the afternoon while football beat West Virginia on the Owens two point conversion to go 11-0.
12/2/89 I recall being in the Manley parking lot after BB beat Temple 73-56 listening to Rob Carpenter catch a couple of long ones to beat Louisville in Toyko 24-13.
11/25/95 FB lost to U of Miami 24-35. BB beat Lafayette 87-63
11/30/96 FB again loses to U of Miami 31-38. BB beat UNC-Greensboro 73-56

1/2/99 FB lost to Florida 10-31 in the Orange Bowl while BB beat West Virginia 83-67
11/13/99 FB lost to Rutgers 21-24, (their only win of the season). BB beat a Wisconsin team that wound up in the Final Four 68-49.
12/29/99 FB beat Kentucky in the Music City Bowl 20-13. BB beat Hartford 90-69.
11/25/00 FB beat Rutgers 44-21. BB beat Missouri 84-62.

11/22/08 Fb Greg Robinson got his last moment of glory, (there were only two) beating Note Dame 24-23 while Jim Boeheim’s boys beat defending nation champion Kansas 89-81 to win a tournament in Kansas City. That was a very good day.
11/27/10 FB lost to Boston College 7-16. FB beat Georgia Tech 80-76.

11/26/16 FB played flag football with Pitt, 61-76 while BB lost to South Carolina 50-64.
11/18/17 Louisville ran past our FB team, 10-56, while BB beat Texas Southern 80-67.
11/16/18 Our powerful 2018 FB team ahd their one lost weekend, losing to Notre Dame 3-36 when the BB found out what they weren’t against Oregon 65-80.
12/5/20 FB again lost to Notre Dame 21-45. BB beat Rider 87-52
11/20/21 FB goes down to NC State 17-41 while the BB team gets shocked by Colgate 85-100.
Overall the football team is 12-18 in these ‘doubleheaders’ while basketball is 24-6. Not only are we better at basketball than football but the opposition basketball normally faces in November is a lot less potent than the opposition the football team faces in that month. The best day, in terms of combined points margin, is a tie: +64 12/5/59 and 11/23/85, although the significance of the first date is far greater. The worst day was 11/16/18: -48, although today, (-39), hurt at least as much.
