All of what you say makes sense...except that the vast majority of kids do not want to automatically redshirt if they are ready to play. Convincing a kid to come to Syracuse that could go to Pitt, BC, Maryland, etc and compete for playing time as a freshman is an unwinnable battle. You might get a quarterback or an offensive lineman from time to time because they are more likely to redshirt anywhere, or a kid coming off an injury that is destined for a redshirt anywhere. But a running back, D-line, receiver, linebacker, etc that can play as a freshman will choose to play somewhere where they have an opportunity to get on the field especially if it's an equally or more attractive program. Again...if you do this, you're getting kids that are willing to redshirt to play in the ACC rather than play in the MAC or Sunbelt or maybe a lower level AAC program maybe. Now, if you concede that you can't win enough battles against the likes of these peer P5 programs in any event (like Wake did), and I think an argument might could be made that way by some people, then this approach is reasonable. But you cannot have both this approach AND still have decent recruiting. You simply write off recruiting any better than last in the ACC, and expect worse than it is currently, if you do this. The 3 star running back that sees the wisdom of coming to Syracuse and sit for a year versus going to VT and getting snaps...he just doesn't exist. A 2-star or unrated guy who's other choice is Western Michigan...yeah, maybe. But nothing you say about the value of redshirting or having older, more developed guys is off base. But unless you think a 22 year old no-star is going to be better than a 21 year old 3 star recruit, I don't think it can be parlayed to your advantage.
