Just back to Philly. Haven't read the board so forgive me for repeating. Once again, win or lose, the pre-game in the Quad is great - go there and watch the band on Hendricks Chapel and enjoy all the activity - it's great and is part of the reason that going to an SU Football game is a lot of fun. The Dome crowd was very supportive today. It was a very good college football environment. I didn't see any replays but some of the calls against us seemed pretty questionable. And I wondered why on running plays the referee continually stopped the clock after tackles? AJ Long was a revelation to me. He seems almost to be everything that T. Hunt is not - quick, decisive, accurate, able to throw touch passes and most important - football savvy. He looked like he had already played a lot of major college football and is probably going to prove his off-season prediction true - he will start as a true frosh. Even his post game interview was impressive. As I watched him, I found myself thinking about Russell Wilson. There are just some athletes that understand how to play. Coach McDonald was active and involved on the sideline. He demonstrated commitment, and professionalism while encouraging the offense at every turn. I was particularly impressed as he put his arm around AJ Long during a time out - he showed me a lot today. John Raymon has more courage than nearly anyone I know. I am truly amazed that he is playing and playing well. AAM once again demonstrated as much improvement from an SU Football player as I have ever seen. I think he should get more carriers per game because he hits holes, has deceptive speed and is really productive. And PTG may not have breakaway speed, but he is a heck of a player. Cole Murphy has done a terrific job - solid KOs and place kicking. And Dixon looks like an NFL punter. Once again I wonder why it seems that on every other play there is a Syracuse player down on the turf injured. I almost look to see after every play who the next victim will be. The offense looked better organized with fewer moving parts. Both Austin and AJ made it clear to me that Terrel just does not throw the ball well enough to be a truly effective major college football player. FSU is not the best team in the country. J. Winston is a great talent, obviously, but he surprised me with so many emotional outbursts. I think I saw him yell at Jumbo after a swing pass lost three yards? He seems like a bit of a hot head - needlessly. The two Noles who really impressed me were TE Nick O'Leary and frosh RB, Dalvin Cook - amazing speed. Something that once again made me feel, for the first time in weeks, that the future is bright - our best players seem to be RS frosh or true frosh. AJ throws TD passes to Ishmael and Murphy kicks the PAT. Erv Phillips looked really fast again. And on KO returns it seemed that Parris Bennett and Zaire Franklin were very physical. All in all, I had a great time today. The Orange showed a lot of grit and truly competed. There are no moral victories but the players and coaches showed me something today.
