There was a recent article on Syracuse.com about how the University is trying to find creative ways to raise extra $$:

Like alot of people on here I am an obsessive fan when it comes to SU Hoops and SU Football. The only thing I compares for me is my obsession for bands like Phish. I attend a lot of concerts and they are always trying new ways to separate their fans from their wallets. One thing they do that has really done well is that they sell Limited Edition posters for each concert. They hire artists to prepare high quality original artwork, limit the run to no more than 1,000 per concert and sell them before the shows. Each poster is numbered and signed by the artist. They quickly sell out almost always before the concert starts and they are often traded on the secondary market for much more than the $50 price tag. Each poster run raises $50,000 before expenses - not too bad.

I was thinking that something similar for SU games would be pretty cool. Hire an artist for the big SU games. I'm not talking the cheap poster they give away for free at the fair - high quality posters prepared by known artists. Sell these event specific posters pregame all around the dome. They might have to start someplace south of $50 until it takes off - but I could see some interest here. Especially for the Duke type games.

End rant.

If the University really wants to raise money they should just have Quickdraw at the games. Place would be a sellout every game. But the whole place would smell of stale cigarette smoke and there would be cheering at the wrong times a real lot.

Easy...just raise tuition!

But seriously, the poster idea is cool. In fact, the VPA school has a full printmaking studio with some incredible equipment. I'm sure they can commission something from a printmaking major or a professor. However, the market for original prints is much higher at a Phish concert than an SU basketball game.

Not necessarily related to the article, but just a first hand observation:

As anyone who has gone to SU can attest to, the sheer amount of wealth that many of the SU students come from is staggering (I guess that comes with the $40k price tag). In that regard I find it hard to believe that SU has had so much trouble recently trying to raise funds.

Seems to me like they are trying to bleed the locals dry when the real untapped wells of funds are driving around in BMWs and Mercedez's in NJ and NYC. Unfortunately, they are just a little too far to head up to the dome to participate in the fund raisers mentioned in the article. But then again, these casuals might be weary about giving the school large sums of money.

Tough spot SU is in.

If SU Athletics needs money, maybe they should think of more incentives for people who donate in the $500-$10,000 range. If I remember correctly, that donor level lost pretty much all of their perks, no?

Make shirts. Sell them for. $10 a piece the next time we play them and sell them as people walk into the dome. Easy $25,000 profit

I always felt becoming a state school would help Syracuse, but it will never happen.

I still get a pocket calendar and a thank you note.
