Do we recruit kids in Hawaii? I'm genuinely curious, I admit I don't follow recruiting that closely. I know the distance for visits is a bit of an issue but I'm sure have a coach or two that wouldn't mind going there. I'm lucky enough to travel there pretty often and I've noticed they have a huge HS football culture there.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Why would a kid from Hawaii want to come to snowy Syracuse? Leaving the islands for college seems to be a prestige thing for Hawaiian kids. My old roommate from SU moved out there after graduation and he shared a house with 2 dudes who played football at Boise State and Iowa State before moving back to the islands. The other thing we have his Dino. That kind of "in" counts for a lot there.

TLDR Version: Hawaii has a lot of good athletes that are eager to play college ball on the mainland, we have a coach that has strong ties to the state. Are we trying to work that at all?

Well Jeff Chan did come to Syracuse. I believe he transferred but he did come here.

We do if I remember correctly we were recruiting 3 or 4 kids and coach McCloud went on visits in Hawaii.

Didn’t Colt Brennan want to come here? How would SU’s present history look if he had smh

I read up on him because of your post. He had no offers (not all that unusual for a dedicated kicker I'd imagine) but got on Babers' radar via his Hawaii connections and offered him a preferred walk-on spot. Believed to be the first player from Hawaii in program history according to the article I found. Hopefully not the last.

Hawaii kids come here because they want see a “change” in weather. A girl on my floor was from Hawaii. She loved her time her, got sick of the winter after the first couple of storms but in general loved it. She’s back there now as a hot shot real estate broker

If you had done a search on the FB recruiting forum for Hawaii you would have found this thread.

Recruiting Hawaii

Good read. Thanks, TBH I didn't know we had a search function and the recruiting forums are places I seldom tread.

I think the people calling it a waste of time seriously underestimate some things:
1) how much Babers' personal ties matter there
2) how eager kids are to get off the island and experience the mainland
3) how much talent is there
4) that like Southerners, most Hawaiians assume that all of NYS is NYC haha

Everyone is always welcome on the recruiting forums...you may get a glimpse of the future.
And if you look at the top right hand of the page there is the search function link.

I think we used to recruit Hawaii pretty hard until the administration realized 6 coaches went to Hawaii every February, stayed in a 5star resort for 2 weeks, and never got a single kid to commit : )

I think it boils down to bang for the buck. It takes a long time to get to Hawaii from Syracuse and the success rate would be low, i.e. one or two kids every couple of years. The western programs have a decided advantage due overwhelmingly to geography. It probably makes more sense to keep that recruiter in CONUS where he can hit 10 to 12 schools in the same amount of time it takes to see one kid in Hawaii.

Michigan State used to do some recruiting in Hawaii
