As with other things (e.g. employment opportunities), if you try to put one opportunity on hold while waiting for a perfect situation, you just might end up with neither.

There's a reasonable time in which to accept an offer. If those that are extending the offer get a sense that they're being played, identify a better candidate, or have a real need and would rather take a similar candidate that will accept instead of the "troublesome" candidate ... then offers have a tendency to go *poof*.
