I went to the game tonight with my friend, Mitzi. We paid $20 for courtside seats, not realizing they were CTO seats, I mean, they were courtside! I just thought they were in the first tier. A little knowledge to tuck away for the next game. There were less than 500 people there, but they became pretty enthusiastic in the second half. Mitzi knew very little about the game of basketball and I was pleased to dazzle her with my knowledge. Mitzi: "What just happened?" Me: "Rutgers just fouled us." Mitzi: "What did they do?" Me: "I don't know."
Throughout the game I kept going into a fugue state, thinking I was watching a men's bball game. At the half it was something like 17 - 15. The shooting was terrible! Mitzi, bedazzled and appalled, at first kept commenting, "Boy, they sure are rough with each other. Is it like that with the men's games?" I assured her that, alas, it was. Things were better in the second half. Our tall center who has been a scoring sensation was held to a minimum. Coffee (sp?) scored at least 15 points last time I looked. The women played very fast and energetically. They had hustle and muscle. But little accuracy tonight.
Someone tapped me on the shoulder before the second half, and it was Dan! He recognized me. He acknowledged this was an unusually low scoring game for the women. We had a nice chat and he told Mitzi I had written about her on the board. That tickled her. I told Mitzi to look around and imagine that on Saturday there were going to be 35,000 people there. Would she ever want to go to a men's game? "No," she said, "I don't think I could take the frenzy." (She's 80.) I was grateful that so far I CAN take the frenzy; furthermore, I WANT the frenzy!
Thus endeth the story of my first women's game. I will go again.
