There is a considerable amount of mystery and confusion regarding Singh's years at SU.  He certainly wasn't segregated in where he lived as he roomed with both Marty Glickman and Duffy Daugherty.  In researching a play I wrote about him, I interviewed both Glickman and my old coach Roy Simmons Sr.   Both felt the U didn't try to hide the fact he was black, but they didn't openly publicize it either.  It all came to a head the night before the Maryland game when the Terps refused to play if he took the field.  Interesting enough the story was broken by a black Baltimore Newspaper and caused huge controversy in the black community as to where he should have been exposed or not.  One of the very puzzling things is that when the team returned from Maryland an investigation was evidently launched to determined if he had lied about his race.  There is a memo from a Dean which states that he talked to Singh and feels Singh is confused about his identity as he was adopted by an Indian at the age of two.  As a result the University dropped the investigation.  About four or five years ago I was privileged to meet members of his family including an Aunt who said she helped raise him.  She told me he was never confused as to his race.
It's a greart story and I was converting the play into a movie when the Express got there first.  One last note.  The next year Maryland came to SU and Singh played and we killed them
