The reason why there are no examples, not one, is that the only feedback to guide efficient allocation of  investment is through free markets.  How would any politician, spending OPM (other peoples money) with no concern for profit, know the difference between Solindra and First Solar?  Is utopian vision high value information or is market feedback high value information?      
 
The reason for our emotion is that libs have bankrupted our country with statist command economy policies.  Despite Obama's mindless socialist ramblings, freedom is equal opportunity, just as our Founding Father's saied.  Freedom is not freedom from want ie. guaranteed outcome.  Obama has said that he laments that our Founding Fathers did not define freedom as freedom from want.  I surmise that he is unaware that both the Soviet and Nazi constitutions defined freedom as freedom from want, as did Roosevelt's proposed New Constitution.  Our heritage is Locke/Burke/Jefferson/Madison/Washington; not Marx.  The liberal definition of freedom is the conservative's definition of dependency/serfdom.  The two concepts are incompatible.  I hope this helps explain why conservatives are upset.  A safety net is one thing but unsustainable entitlements are quite another.
