Congratulations Coach Fine as you head into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame on Monday Night!! Bernie Fine has been synonymous with Syracuse and basketball since his high school coaching days dating back to 1970. A native of Brooklyn, Bernie found his way to Syracuse University, graduating in 1967. He stayed in the area, coaching basketball and football at Lincoln Junior High before moving to Henninger High where he was the JV basketball coach before becoming the head coach. In 1976 he joined the SU staff where he remains today as Associate Head Coach. His 35 years as a Division I assistant is the longest active streak in college. As Jim Boeheim's long-time assistant, Bernie has tutored the SU big men, including Roosevelt Bouie, Danny Schayes, Rony Seikaly, Etan Thomas, John Wallace, Arinze Onuaku and Rick Jackson - quite a list of ever present shotblockers, scorers and NBA stalwarts. An active member of the Syracuse community, Bernie is past president of the Central New York Kidney Foundation. In 2003 Fine was honored at the Temple Adath Yeshurun Citizen of the Year Dinner. He and his wife, Laurie, have a son David and daughters Sheila and Sara.
