The Broncos take on the Seahawks again today after their embarrassing performance in the Super seven months ago. I remember the first game after the merger in 1970. The NFL scheduled the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to open in Minnesota against the same Viking team they'd defeated 23-7 in Super Bowl IV. The Vikings gained revenge, 27-10. I thought that was a really smart way for the NFL to begin the new season and the new era.

They've never done it since.

On 12/11/17 the Vikings, who'd been crushed by the Raiders in SB XI, 32-14, were sent to Oakland to take on the R aiders again. they got crushed again, 35-13.

On 10/28/79 The Steelers hosted the Cowboys, who they had won a Classic Super Bowl, 35-31 the previous January. They won again 14-3.

On 9/12/93, in the second game of the season. the Bills, after a 52-17 disaster in the previous Super Bowl, traveled to Dallas and beat the Cowboys 13-10. They faced each other again in that season's Super Bowl on 1/30/94 but got beat again, 30-13. That's the only time teams have played each other in consecutive Super Bowls.

There's no pattern to look for in those results. There's just two few such results.

Wouldn't it be great if the winner of the Super Bowl opened the next season by traveling to the home field of the loser to begin the next season, as was done right at the beginning back in 1970?
