Surprise! Worthwhile Bud article

That was the best little article ever written from an opera loving scribe for the little burg sitting hard by the trail's end of the Applachian Chain. It beckons back to my days as a little tike playing whiz bang baseball under the leaves of my youth.

So disappointed...how could Bud NOT use "ramrod" in an article comparing SU's football coaches!??!?

Or did I miss it?

Interesting. What a drop for Pasqualoni from his first 40 (30-9-1), to his last 40 (19-21).

Top that off with the hiring of Greggers. The darkest years of my fandom.

Bud must read this board, we were talking about Ben,Mac,Frank and their records after stern started the thread on Stonybrook.

Good article. And I will add that success is more difficult to come by now, when CFB is exponentially more competitive than it was 20, 30, 40 years ago. Getting an advantage is no longer as simple as having some rich L.I. Businessman front some college tuition, and the Dome is no longer brand new. It's hard work.

If you are reading this, nice job Bud. You whiz bang you.

Sorry, no whiz bangs. An article worth reading though. Puts the full ineptitude Marrone walked into in perspective, and what he has done since.
18-22 over his first 40

still frustrated that the Minn game his first year was lost on a bad snap and a terrible decision by the QB in OT
still frustrated that the Rutgers game last year was lost on a dropped INT
still frustrated that the NW game this year was lost on a bad lateral and poor decision by the RB

all three of those games were DOMINATED by SU - should be 21-19 overall

He must have been listening to Caruso singing Santa Lucia with the volume cranked up to 10 when he wrote that

Interesting article. So a Jerome Smith brain fart is all that stands between Marrone's first 40 games equalling P's final 40 games? I guess we're right back to where this bad mojo all started.

This article needs to be referenced again and again when it comes to any discussion regarding Marrone's competence. Bud probably should have ended the article by saying "'Nuff Said."

That article is the truth, right there. It's the final word. Without a doubt, the best piece of writing on this subject to date.

But... but... Marrone had PLENTY of talent to win with! His talent level was much better than that inherited by his predecessor! But...

(Sarcasm).

Look at what P inherited and what Marrone inherited. Reminds me of "Its' The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown":

I got five pieces of candy!”
“I got a chocolate bar!”
“I got a quarter!”
Charlie Brown: “I got a rock.”

"Guys, lets be honest. In the "good old days" there was no Rutgers, there was no UConn, there was no UMass. Syracuse PSU and to extent BC were it in the north east.

If you put together an all star team comprised of the best athletes/players between SU, UConn, and RU, that team would compete with anyone. Frankly there are not ENOUGH recruits in the area to spread between the three schools.

As much as I'd like to keep UConn and RU around for regional rivalries, IMHO we cant get better while they are still in the picture. That being said, the faster we get into the ACC and the faster they die on the vine in the NNBE, the better off we'll be"

This is a fun site where you can check major college football records and winning percentages for variosu periods:
http://football.stassen.com/records/compute-request.html

1949-1955 We were the 51st winningest team in the country.
1956-67: We were the 7th winningest team in the country. Of the teams ahead of us, four were mid-majors, (Bowling Green, Arizona State- then a WAC team- Dartmouth and Wyoming), and two were schools that neither used nor played anyone with black players, (Alabama, Mississippi)

1981-86: We were the 61st winningest team in the country.
1987-2001: We were the 10th winningest team in the country. There were four schools that had a winning record every year of this period: Florida State, Nebraska, Michigan and Syracuse.

We are not like Oklahoma, Southern California and Alabama, who can go through a fallow period and then suddenly get the right coach and turn it on. it takes us a while to build up to our peak periods. But when we get there, we are pretty good.

You gotta love this quote from "AllOrange44":

"Gross did NOT want him. The job was Chip Kellys, Skip Holtzs, or Brady Quinns. ESPN said Brady was a LOCK!"

Gee, we would have had Brady Quinn as our coach!

I'm glad that article got some of you excited.

I'm not in the camp that thinks that was a great article or particularly good analysis though.

Good article by Bud's low standards, particularly in providing interesting information. But talking about "record improvement" was a bit of a stretch - looking at the prior seasons records, the top two coaches had MUCH more room to improve than the others. It's nice to see, but nothing to put alot of stock into.

Provides some context. Nothing wrong with that.

So I'm about to head into my doctors office and I hear Learch on my radio say, "Listen to this Bud here's a post on one of the message boards from TexanMark, "

Then he says here's another good one from All4SU, "If you are reading this, nice job Bud. You whiz bang you."
They both got a kick out of those posts.

I wouldn't go handing out the Pulitzer just yet for the article. In fact, most of the points have already been made on the board. Just thought it was a good read and a pleasant little surprise from Bud.
