(This is the fourth and last of my 'Orangehoops' projects.)

For fun, I decided to use the Orangehoops site: Syracuse Orange Basketball Season Records to rank SU’s walk-ons in the Boeheim Era using my “Net Points” system. These are their total career NP in their time at SU. I didn’t do averages because the sample numbers are so limited and they tended to play against the other team’s walk-ons. I’m counting them as a ‘walk-on’ if Orangehoops says they were. if they came here as a walk on, I'll count them as a walk-on for their entire career even if they were eventually given a scholarship.

The “Net Points” formula: Points + Rebounds +Assists + Steals + Blocks – Missed field goals – Missed free throws – turnovers – fouls = “Net Points”

Hardly any of them were more important than Justin Thomas's two net points in the Six Overtime game against UConn. After three starers had fouled out, he played the final seven minutes ... contributing one rebound and one blocked shot (as part of his six career net points). In addition, he had no turnovers and no missed shots in that game.

Oddly enough, the blocked shot was the the only one of his entire three-season SU career. He was a slightly built guard who was listed as 6'1", but was probably shorter.

Including his seven minutes in the six-overtime game, he played exactly 29 minutes all season.

I remember him going out there and doing jumping jacks on defense while everyone else was dragging. The announcers made note of it and laughed.

Some great names on that list. I totally forgot Charlie Lockwood suited up. And Kouwe might be on the bottom but he has a championship ring.

I remember Jim Hayes well from the early to mid 90’s. He was probably one of the biggest walk ons we ever had. He was around 6’9” or 6’10”. He came to SU as a walk on but was a scholarship player his remaining 3 years at SU. Sadly he was injured all the time. I remember going with my sons to a midnight madness at Manley and noticed him. His size and build really impressed me. JB had him redshirt the first, his walk on year but he never ended up using it, leaving after being here 4 years in total, never using that 5th year he earned by redshirting because of injuries.

Am I mis-remembering, did Howard Triche start off as a walk-on.

No he was always a scholarship player but very rarely played his freshman and sophomore years (playing behind Wendall Alexis, Raf Addison etc) before becoming a starter his junior year. There was an interesting podcast with Howard and Mike Waters early this year telling his story including his recruitment. Committing to Texas A&M? Transferring to George Washington? Howard Triche tells the story of his Syracuse career
