Pitt’s Front Seven Can Still Wreck Drives – Even with injuries, Pitt’s linebackers remain the strength of their defense. They bring creative blitz packages and can stuff drives early if Syracuse doesn’t handle protection. One or two big negative plays can kill momentum quickly.
QB Inconsistency – Rickie Collins is still growing into the role. The flashes of talent are there, but the turnovers and hesitation show up just as often. If he struggles to read Pitt’s disguised coverages or forces throws into traffic, the offense could sputter — even at home.
Pitt’s “Just Enough” Offense – Pitt’s offense won’t wow anyone, but it’s experienced enough to take advantage of mistakes. If Syracuse’s defense misses tackles or gives up short fields, Pitt can methodically grind out points and frustrate the Orange.
Pass Protection Still a Concern – The Dome crowd will be behind them, but the offensive line still needs to keep Collins upright. Pitt’s linebackers and interior pressure can collapse the pocket fast, and if that starts happening, SU’s game plan shrinks fast.
Inconsistent Offensive Identity – Syracuse hasn’t yet found its offensive rhythm — too many three-and-outs followed by bursts of life. If they can’t get Willis going or find early rhythm through the air, Pitt’s defense will settle in and start dictating the tempo.
Defensive Fatigue in the Second Half – Even at home, SU’s defense has spent too much time on the field in recent games. If Pitt strings together long drives, that front seven can wear down, leading to those late-game chunk plays that have haunted them.
Red Zone Efficiency – Syracuse has moved the ball between the 20s, but too many drives have stalled inside the red zone. Field goals won’t beat a veteran team like Pitt — if SU doesn’t finish drives, it could come back to haunt them.
Turnovers & Missed Chances – The difference between a Dome win and another frustrating loss could come down to the little things: a fumble, a dropped third-down ball, or a bad read at the wrong time. Pitt’s not great, but they’re experienced — and they’ll capitalize on mistakes.
