In this ESPN video about the NC and what is to be done, ACC Commissioner Swofford indicated that the 5 big boys at the table...did it forget about the BE or did he and others already determine the BE is no longer important. This is quite a statement. Couple this with his view that the ACC is very stable and that the TV contract is a good one. What do you think of all this?

I think he was trying to say there are 5 major conferences...and not 4.

Thought the interview was pretty 'meh' to be honest. He continued his all is well approach. We can only hope he is not furiously bailing water with his bucket in the background. :)

If he really had a set he would have said "there are four major conferences and Texas."

Fighting back the Big 12 misinformation campaign.

Here's what I don't get. If FSU and Clemson have zero interest in the Big12 as most here have said, them what does B12 misinformation get them? Does the B12 think that if they and their pawns toss enough bull out there that FSU and others will think about going to another conference?

Yep. FSU and Clemson would love to be part of the SEC. No question about that. By playing footsie with the Big 12 and destabilizing things a bit, maybe the SEC bites first and takes them. That's how I see it, anyway, from the Florida State perspective. Use the Big 12's interest to try to get an invite from the one you REALLY want. Just like Missouri tried to do with the Big 10, but got scooped out of it by Nebraska. Missouri wanted that spot so bad.

That answer is backwards to the question.

I guess I didn't understand the question. Are you asking, "What do FSU and Clemson get out of the rumors?" or "What does the Big 12 get out of it?"

Because from the Big 12's perspective, they were left for dead a year ago, and so now they are trying to knock the ACC down one peg below the other 4 conferences. That would leave 4 conferences to decide the "true" national championship. So, to me, anyway, it's clear why the Big 12 would like to poach the ACC of two of their best football names (along with Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech).

And from the perspective of those schools, they don't mind egging on the rumors, because it might tempt the SEC into offering them an invitation, in order to avoid missing out should they change conferences away from the ACC.

I can't for the life of me see Florida State, and especially Clemson, wanting to play in a Midwestern conference. They are distinctly southern schools, and that still counts for a lot down south.

I'm not sure how much interest the Big 12 had in either Clemson & FSU until the internet flames grew hot. There is so much misinformation & disinformation out there no clear picture has emerged. We do not know exactly what the ACC contract gives each member institution, nor do we know what the members of the Big 12 will be paid annually, but we know it is not evenly distributed. We just sit & wait...

I was responding to a comment about the B12 putting out bogus info.

Yes, Clemson especially. 10,000 Clemson fans can and do travel to four away games a year in the ACC. B12, hah. While FSU joined 20 years ago, Clemson was a founding member 50 years ago, and they have rivalries longer that that. If FSU leaves, they can go back to being the big fish. VT and Miami notwithstanding.

What do some animals do to avoid predators? They puff themselves up to make it look like they are bigger than they actually are. To scare off anyone looking to do them harm. IMO that is exactly what the B12 is doing. If the PAC or Big 10 were looking to expand they are not looking to the BE or the ACC. They are looking at the B12 and UT specifically. So all of this could very well be a bluff by the B12 to keep itself intact.

It also might very well get the ACC to make concessions/changes that it normally would not have. It could all be one large play to get those two schools changes in the way the ACC handles some things like the schedule for instance.

I'm not sure the Big 12 information is "bogus". Slightly exaggerated perhaps, but not bogus.

I think the Big 12 knows it needs more markets to survive long-term and Florida is a great market. I see it as the Big 12 using Clemson's dissatisfaction with the ACC to get in the ear of the "real target" FSU. And then, if they could successfully pull off that coup, they might get GT and Miami to get to 14, getting into Georgia and increasing their reach into Florida.

One of the appealing things about the Texahoma schools possibly going to a PAC-16 was combining Texas with California. UT didn't want that because of their LHN and they wanted eastern time zone exposure. Going after Florida (and possibly getting Georgia as well) would be a coup.

Cheers,
Neil

It isn't a dig at the BE. He didn't forget about the BE. It's reality. The man isn't there not to hurt feelings or say nice things so feelings aren't hurt so that he gets away from the point at hand. The BE is a 2nd tier conference on par with the MWC and CUSA. Nobody in their right mind on planet earth considers them an equal anymore with the BIG10, BIG12, SEC, ACC, or PAC 12.

I wouldn't read much into it because the BE is "dead" when it comes to being on that level.

I don't know but one theory which I think it might be is. Maybe the SEC was looking to finalize a deal for that new "bowl game" and it was down to the Big 12 and ACC as their opponent for that bowl game. And the Big 12 floats that story of possibly adding FSU and Clemson, putting out the perception that the BIG 12 is more stable than the ACC, which in turns pushes the SEC to finalize that deal with the BIG 12 for the new bowl game.

The Big 12 gets what it wanted, helps its image some, and hurts the ACC's image in a way in the process.

Don't disagree. But my comment was in response to the post saying "Fighting back the Big 12 misinformation campaign."

And that Oklahoma will soon be in the Big10

That was me---and by misinformation campaign it is how they are using the Internet to push their agenda. They have idiot Internet posters and bloggers pushing all sorts of doomsday scenarios with the grand steps that will happen to runi the ACC...then the more mainstream media started to pick up on this Internet campaign. There has been lots of lazy, recycled articles quoting some of the same bad info on the ACC. Unfortunately, FSU and Clemson fans are using the ACC as a scapegoat for why they have underachieved (about 10 years in FSU's case and about forever in Clemson's case).
