I took every school's ranking in yards per game and subtracted their ranking in points per game. The lower the number means you gain a lot of yards but don't score much.

We're 4th worst in the country at scoring relative to the yards we gain. 50th in yards, 88th in points. Indiana, Boise St, and Wash St are the only ones worse

I did the same thing with rushing yards and points rankings. We're 5th worst there.

Order of importance-

wins > points > yards

Typically, you'd think yards translate to points, which translate to wins. Strange year.

We had the same problem in 2012

We were 4th worst in the country in terms of points relative to yards gained. 17th yards, 55th points. What. Yards and points are correlated, I think i remember about 75% correlation among all teams in a year. But we're alwasy the exception

scoring
2014 88th
2013 99th
2012 55th
2011 83rd
2010 93rd
2009 99th

High yards, few points is the equivalent of poor redzone efficiency.

What contributes to that is turnovers, penalties, and poor kicking. I think we can all agree we've had these issues .

Idiotic punts contribute also. You can only have a truly idiotic punt after picking up decent yards.

And the formula to turn it around is the same as 2012:

Win games late in the season by limiting self-inflicted wounds, red-zone scoring efficiency, and converting take aways.

The offense just doesn't seem to have any flow to it. Do we run plays to set up other plays? Do we notice tendencies and capitalize on them? Those deep passes early in each half, did we ever give them a similar look but do something different? Why didn't we come back to them? I just get the feeling that plays are called at random with little rhyme or reason.

i think the formula is run the damn ball. 2012 they started scoring more when they ran the ball more

Totally Agree with you. Punting is Overrated, and there really isn't a good time to punt in football. It's dumb in Highschool, College and the NFL. Statistical evidence has backed this up for years, but coaches are ignorant when it comes to punting. In fact, football follows analytics probably less than baseball or basketball coaches at this point. Basically the problem with punting is it leads your team to score less than the amount of points it was expected to, which in turn leads to giving up wins.

It feels like GMcD uses one of these to call plays. Maybe we should just hire Yolanda Vega as offensive coordinator.
