can't link here but excellent article for subscribers. Summary - definitely not one of the stellar moments in the history of the University. Does anyone know if the protest ended the "quota" system that was allegedly in place in terms of positions and number of players at one time? Just a painful read and memory.

I am a little too young to have followed the program when the protest happened but I can say going by memory only, the number of African Americans on the team increased under Coach Maloney quite dramatically.

By the late 1970s, Tim Wilson, an African American, was starting at QB and there were a lot of other minorities in starting roles on offense and defense. Ben had a couple of African Americans starting at QB early in his coaching career at Syracuse (Custis and Stone) but that ended pretty early. From comments I have read made by Jim Brown, it sounded like Stone dated a white girl and that freaked out Ben and he limited opportunities for minorities pretty severely from that point forward.

It is a sad thing and even sadder, Syracuse was relatively progressive in this area at that time.

In the express movie the lineman that was Eminem's fat buddy in 8 Mile talks about coach's "White Girl Talk"

if the quotes in the article are true (and I have no reason to believe they aren't), informing the players that inter-racial dating was not allowed was discussed in the car ride from the airport.
