Syracuse assistant coach Bobby Acosta on recruiting New Jersey: 'I think I've accomplished a lot'

It's amazing we've gone this long w/o a legitimate NJ recruiter. He (or someone similar)should have been hired years ago.

The time had to be right. This is a tight-knit group of coaches, usually with prior ties and connections. Bringing in a new guy is like adding a new sister wife.

This hire was worth every penny. Even if he isn't a great coach, his NJ connections are worth it alone.

Love eating Rutgers' lunch again (obviously not this super fan's though)...

I don't personally like the quote bagging on someone else. I'm a humble guy who lets actions speak for words but that's just me.

If we keep Strickland that's a HUGE win, but there's still work to be done in landing Mr Kelly and maybe Mr Fox. I assume Ellison is in the fold because I haven't seen any movement on DB's lately and the rumored silent. Those are both big gets in light of our recent history down there. Besides Acosta, it also helps that we're winning again and on the rise. We all know it was crazy to not recruit NJ but I don't think that was for lack of trying, but rather nobody was interested in a losing program that was being bagged on - thank you Mr Robinson.

One quote I do love is the "there's a brand of defensive style we're going to play", that's been obvious with Coach Shafer and now Bullough for some time and every kid who plays defense should be excited about that. I love our defensive brand.

I thought you followed recruiting more than this. We lost NJ before Robinson came along. I don't know why, but the last few P years the NJ recruiting dried up. Robinson actually started bringing in some NJ kids and was beginning to make some headway. But then Marrone burned bridges in large parts of NJ. If Marrone was still here, we still wouldn't be recruiting there much at all.

The phrase "burned bridges" seems to pop up when Marrone is discussed.

A long time ago JerseyOrange said in a post that Jersey dried up because (in part) the local coaches thought that our offense, and program in general, were stale and outdated. If I recall.

Has anyone ever seen Coach Acosta and Jersey Orange together in the same room at the same time?

Getting back into NJ is overdue, but Shafer found a gem in Acosta (engaging personality and background in region) and the opportunity is big (more to sell with ACC, recent bowl wins, RU in disarray).

But he's not, and we are. So can't we at least seem to be happy about it? And give credit where credit is due instead of dwelling on the past? Just saying...

I responded to a post incorrectly dwelling on the past. Just saying...

I didn’t incorrectly dwell in the past. I didn’t bag on Robinson’s recruiting in NJ, I correctly gave him credit for a losing program which made it next to impossible for us to recruit there. When Marrone came on board in the face of 10 wins and 37 losses over 4 years at the same time Rutgers with Schiano was starting to flex their muscle. We couldn’t beat anybody in NJ let alone Rutgers.

I don’t know if Marrone burned bridges or not. I find it hard to believe there were any bridges left to burn. Marrone did make an effort to get back in NJ by bringing in DyShawn Davis, Krautman, Mungwa (from Bergen Catholic nonetheless), and Marcus Coleman. 2 starters, 1 quit and 1 TBD. (recruited Spruill from Prep School not out of NJ)

I don’t recollect Pasqualoni’s NJ problems, I’ll have to go back and look. But I do remember Schiano was a huge reason calling the ‘meeting’ of HS coaches and aggressively negatively recruiting Syracuse. And clearly the P era had gone stale NJ kids started looking for something else.

Coach P, Marrone none of that matters though on the disaster that was Greg Robinson. Marrone had a monstrous task of pulling Syracuse out of the depths of the Robinson despair. They started to win NJ back by getting a program that could compete and now Shafer is running with it and making the right hires. Shafer being a college guys knows how this sht works.

Excellent point. our defensive brand is out there with 5 years of history. Any defensive player should enjoy this style of play.

That says we weren't recruiting NJ because we were a losing program due to Robinson. Again, completely wrong. We weren't recruiting NJ before he even got here. Marrone getting 1 NJ kid a year isn't hitting it either. He burned bridges. He pissed off some influential people and coaches in parts of NJ. Some wouldn't even let us in their school.

HCSS is a breath of fresh air.
