Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins said Thursday that he has had recent conversations with SU chancellor Kent Syverud about his status as head coach-in-waiting.

"I've been talking to the chancellor,'' Hopkins said in his first public comments since Jim Boeheim announced his plans for retiring in three years. "I'm very comfortable and confident that everything will work out for the best. For everybody out there that's concerned about Mike Hopkins, I'm not getting into what's been said or not said.

"I'm very comfortable and confident,'' he added. "I'm happy with our conversations. I'm sure everything will be worked out.''

The only good thing about JB having to serve the 9 game suspension will be seeing what Hop can do with the team. I have no doubt he will fare better than Fine did despite no contact with JB during the suspension.

This sorta goes along with the suspicion I had initially about the "not at this time" statement--Gross and JB news was a big story, and Hopkins news would have been too much. It would also not be fair to Mike, as the glory of being named the new coach would have been lost in the bigger news. It will come some time in the future.

nothing will be announced on Mike until after the appeal and i would imagine all of next year
