One way to determine if a team is improving is to see how they've done against the spread. It's a way to gauge baby steps, and gradual improvement. Syracuse has beat the spread in their last three games, and would be 4-1 ATS this year if they had beaten CCSt. by 48 instead of 43. I throw that game out, and that puts them 3-1 ATS against D-I opponents this year.

As I said, when you can't see improvement in W-L, I think this is a decent way to gauge small improvements. This team is more competitive. They shot themselves in the foot all day long today, and still beat the spread. That's a good sign.

I'm having trouble finding a site that shows ATS stats from previous years. If anyone knows of one, let me know.

Thanks OrangeXtreme. Kind of bears out what I was thinking. 4-8 against the spread last year. It will be interesting to follow this throughout this season. I can see the baby steps being made, but this is an interesting way to see if they are improving on a week to week basis. 3-8 against D-I opposition.

So we've already beat the spread the same amount of times this year as last. To me, that's a sign of a team that's starting to figure it out. It honestly kind of reminds me of 2012, where that team shot itself in the foot early in the season, and couldn't quite figure out. By the end of the season they were a top 25 team. I'm not sure this team will reach that level simply because of the brutal schedule.

We'll see...
