Are people still all worried about that on here??? Somehow thinking some drunk 43 year old gas station attendant on erie blvd hyping up the school is going to be some sort of violation, or better the 19 year old skanky POA with shots of her nearly exposed chest? the thought that someone could control that kind of activity, or that it doesn't happen with every single school out there, makes no sense at all.

No, but a 50 year old season ticket holder and Orange Club member would be committing a violation if he contacted recruits and hyped up the school.

I think that happens regularly at many schools and is absolutely impossible to control or police. Or maybe not 50 year, those guys probably aren't on twitter :). I just don't see how something so commonplace and outside of the control of a university could possibly ever be an issue - you'd have to penalize every single school and imagine the waste of resurces trying to police it. Plus twitter is so public, you couldn't possibly be offering the recruit anything. It jus doesn't pass the common sense test to me.

On a related topic though - I'm an orange club member, is it a violation when if my kid's soccer coach talks to me about the school when his daughter is being recruited for soccer there? I don't recall anything in the membership material telling me not to do that if asked...?? If this stuff is really so strict that some people are worried about twitter, than the AD should be very clear to donors what is and isn't ok. People love their school, that's why they donate.

Talking to the coach isn't a problem, especially if he approaches you first.

You just can't be actively recruiting his daughter. #creepy.

Yeah she's 15. It's more the wife who talks about it.

It's unreal that they give offers to sophomores for girls soccer. what is the deal?

Title IX...way easier for above average hs girls to get scholies in sports

Still think you're reading this wrong. Think of Twitter as a big party where everyone is talking out loud to each other. It would be impossible to police in real life - and that's why it's near impossible now.

I had a similar situation a few years ago.. when SU basketball was recruiting the son of a work colleague of mine. I was initially worried about discussing SU with my colleague... even though we talked sports all the time. I asked SU Compliance for a ruling ... and they told me this: Since I had a pre-existing relationship with the guy and his son (a relationship before we started recruiting the kid), it was perfectly okay for me to discuss SU with him and answer any of his questions about the school. The kid eventually went to Stanford where he mainly sat on the bench for four years.

Then, the very next year, SU football was showing interest in my cousin's son. Since I obviously had a pre-existing relationship with him, I didn't need to ask for a ruling. SU never offered him because they considered him too small, but they invited him to enroll as a "recruited walk-on." He wanted to play, so he went instead to U of New Hampshire where he was the starting QB for three years.

Sounds like you may have a similar situation with the soccer coach.

It's nearly impossible unless you are certified to be someone like...an NFL star telling a kid that his alma mater is where he should go to school.

...but I don't think that DroopyBritches@PoopyPants111 telling a kid a certain school is great is going to get a sniff from the NCAA.

I kind of find that to be troubling. How is a 14 or 15 year old supposed to pick a college? At that age you will just be defaulting to what your parents want you to do, your sense if what you like and who you are is just beginning to develop a little. Anyway such is life I suppose at least they are getting pressures into something positive.

Also it depends somewhat on our relationship with the school. As a trustee or an alumni board member or an alumni club President we also are officially a representative of the school, and may be held to a higher standard as far as what may or may not be acceptable as opposed to someone who is a good fan, or just a good donor. I know I am tied to the university as an official representative. I think Joyce's idea of checking with the school is a good approach to take if you are not sure of what is considered appropriate or not. I know this issue comes up all the time, and they try to cover it with us at our annual meetings. I had such a situation in December when the SU women's basketball team came to AZ to play and we had some alum who wanted to bring students who were current high school players, and wanted to pay for their tickets. I ran this by compliance, not just to protect Syracuse University but also to protect a high school student who has the potential to play for a Div. 1 school someday, and did not want to do anything that might jeopardize their chances at a scholarship opportunity whether that be at Syracuse or any other school.

Syracuse fans look like saints compared to fans at the blue chip programs. You simply cannot control what some lunatic fan will do on Twitter. If Gross started tweeting at some kid, there is a blatant violation; however, what somebody with an aggresive handle says cannot be controlled. Imagine the stuff tweeted at Jameis Winston? Good lord, grown men would've left their wife and kids to get him on campus at their school (probably including all of the administration, lol).

Perfect example is what happened to Mohammed Barry. He got absolutely bombarded with Wisconsin fans, and imo helped swing the momentum in their favor. He was quoted as saying he wanted to go to a school with massive fan support, and they showed him just that.

It has also been brought up more times then I can count that recruits have been influenced by the amount of "love" they received on twitter.

If anyone is ever going to be nailed for this stuff, it's Big Blue Nation on the hoops side.

I don't think we need to worry, considering the stuff those fans do on social media.

I think its kind of creepy for me, as a 31 year old dude, to hype my school to some 17 yr old on Twitter but im glad we have people who do! Clearly it works and clearly the NCAA doesnt care.
