"Lift for Life" is the signature fundraising event for the Uplifting Athletes nationwide network of college football student-athlete led chapters. This year's event will take place at 7 p.m. inside Manley Field House and is open to the public. Parking is free in the Manley North lot. Last summer, Syracuse's "Lift for Life" raised more than $20,000 to benefit the rare-disease community. The mission of Uplifting Athletes is to empower people to take action against rare diseases and inspire the medical community to find cures. The Syracuse chapter's 2017 fundraising goal is again $20,000. Fans and supporters can make donations at: give.upliftingathletes.org/syracuselift2017 Proceeds from the event go to support Uplifting Athletes and its commitment to life skills development, patient-focused programs and rare-disease research. Similar to last year, the Orange football roster has been divided into 10 teams. Teams will compete in a variety of physical challenges with the winner crowned the 2017 "Lift for Life" champion. Supporters are invited to select a team and back that group with their donations. After the event, fans in attendance are welcome to come down to the field for selfies and autographs with their favorite Orange players. Syracuse joined Uplifting Athletes in 2013 to help honor former punter and team captain Rob Long, who overcame Anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare form of brain cancer that caused him to miss the final game of his career. The chapter also enjoys a close relationship with 8-year-old Lillian Belfield of Mexico, N.Y. and her family. Lillian was diagnosed with Anaplastic astroblastoma, a disease similar to Long's. The Orange met Lillian in 2015 and the chapter has maintained a connection with the Belfields, offering encouragement and support. ABOUT UPLIFTING ATHLETES A nonprofit organization founded in 2007, Uplifting Athletes inspires the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport. A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans and typically lacks financial incentive to make and market new treatments. With a network of university chapters run by current college football student-athletes, Uplifting Athletes has established 22 chapters with Division I football programs across the country. Overall, Uplifting Athletes has had an economic impact of more than $400 million on the rare-disease community.
