Syracuse football spring game attendance increases modestly for second straight year up to 4,071

Let's get it over 5k next year.

Glad to see you actively posting Dan, it must be football season! Hope you're feeling better everyday.

I think we get over 5K next year. I also thought that the attendance by the look of it was way more than last year or the year before.

We should be able to match schools like Indiana, vanderbilt, Memphis, Cincinnati, Purdue, East Carolina, Minnesota who all had 5-10000.

I thought it was nicely done this year. There was still to much down time, half time was too long. As fun as it was, it would be nice to have some stakes involved in the game - even small like the losing side does sprints. Or maybe something with charity work at the city schools. The offense/ defense feel just doesnt have the intriue of a real game and the competition to see who should with the 1s vs the 2s.

The lax game at Hobart had to take some attendance. Don't want that on the same day ideally , unless it's a home night game.

I really think our norm should be 8-12k. We will never get 20k. We start putting together a couple Top 25 finishes and I think we can double the attendance.

I might be wrong, but I don't remember ever having a good crowd. Even in the good yrs of P and McNabb.

I'd be interested in some numbers if I'm wrong.

No i dont think weve ever had more than 5000. Thats not saying we shouldnt be able to drum up that kinda support for the team. I do think the summer practices of McNabbs freshman year were well attended (SU always has the Fan day in the summer before practice starts). I remember that summer having a lot of coverage and interest around the program.

I went to fan fest that year as well. It's the Friday of the first week of practice if I'm not mistaken every year. That's when it was still in Manley after the practice session. Food, silent auction, and pay to get in. Lots of buzz that year with both McNabb and Kevin Johnson competing for QB POSITION??

8k would be ideal . Going to be tough, but that's a respectable number

At least we had more than Georgia Tech.

I loved the way HCSS said he wanted to focus on the kids there. Get the kids involved ... so they will ask their parents to take them to games.

Yes I noticed when he was talking to the team after the game, he was reminding them to focus on the kids during the autograph signing. Coach really seems to get it and pays attention to those "little things."

I'll admit: I was tremendously concerned when we hired Shafer. Not because I thought he was incapable, but because he was unproven and we were in a precarious position with the rebuild being incomplete when Marrone left, and I didn't think we could afford to dick around with an inexperienced coaching staff learning the ropes.

I was wrong. Shafer is the right guy for the job. No doubt in my mind.

And I'm very excited to see what this staff can continue to do on the recruiting trail. Last year was only a sneak peak, IMO.

Again, we hired the right guy for the job.

I took note of the amount of players that asked questions of my kids. Did you have fun? You gonna play football? What's your name? Seemed obvious to me that they were making an attempt.

It wasn't until I watched it later in my DVR that I could hear Shafer in his post game huddle tell his team to pay extra attention to the little ones.

LOVE. THIS. GUY.

He has been great with my kids everytime we've had the pleasure.

T Hunt stayed as absolutely long as he could. And was very nice to the kids as well.

And no, they are not all mine. 3 are nieces. Thank God.

I think it will be a slow increase each year as long as the team continues to improve. Keep having 7-6 to 11-2 years and the numbers will slowly climb. Saw the coaches faces when they came out of the tunnel...made a point of it and saw a bit of disappointment in some of them. Money isn't the only thing that keeps them at SU. Granted, it is only a spring game and as long as the numbers go up during the season to 44K or so we'll be fine but the constant uphill battle to recruit players and try to see the school and as I've said many times here...we fans have to do our part. This ball IS in our hands even though I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir but still...I'd love to have a full dome game in and game out.

We were one of 5 ACC teams to publicize our numbers for the game and we weren't last of the 5. That we publicized them says something already. What it says is that 10 other ACC teams fared worse than we did and Pitt didn't even have a spring game. 2 of those 4 ahead of us were Clemson and FL St.

If it was a Friday night game and it was raining, how many would've made it to Archbold?

Not many?

Thankfully, we don't have that problem to worry about!

Next year they should threaten chop blocks on any season ticket holder who doesn't show up to the Spring game. Rain or shine those stands would be full!

Shafer seems to be one of those guys who really gets it. If some of McDonald's recruits start panning out--we've already seen one in Estime--and his speed offense starts to develop, that'll bring more kids to the game. Good, fast offense draws crowds.
