Syracuse football spring practice: Day 1 observations

Some follow-up questions from twitter:

Brent Axe@BrentAxeMedia2m
"Besides PTG and Smith did any other RB stand out or get a lot of reps?"
--PTG is injured. George Morris did and looked good.

Brent Axe@BrentAxeMedia58s
"Who is front runner to take over for MPB at DE? Is Funderburk our #1 WR?"
--I'd say Welsh right now. And QF is legit #1 material

Also

"Bonus note for you.

-Former Syracuse linebacker and linebackers coach Dan Conley attended practice as did former linebacker Derrell Smith."

It's great that Dan can feel a part of the program again. Obviously there were no problems between he and SS as some here had suggested.

No media access again until March 30th. that sucks.
Really annoying considering how much access other programs give to the fans and media.

For comparison i very casually follow Cal's football team since my parents live out there and i try to get to a game a season.

Their athletic dept posts a practice video after every spring practice on youtube (which is accessible on ipads and iphones). As well as coaches and players interviews, pro day, etc.

Also, their fansite www.bearsinsider.com is able to post a spring practice report after every practice and they have a chat with the new head coach.

I don't know why Cuse doesn't step up and produce quality media that the fans will enjoy and use to get behind the team?

"Do things seem a lot different then when marrone was coach?"
--Yes. Shafer has more personality, but pace is intense

Brent Axe@BrentAxeMedia3m
"What about kick returns? Estime?"
--they didn't do a lot of special teams yesterday, but I think he can do it.

Brent Axe@BrentAxeMedia6m
"Will Broyld get any look at QB?"
--He took two snaps yesterday, so only in "wildcat" type role. More of a RB/WR combo

Brent Axe@BrentAxeMedia8m
"How was Broylds demeanor. did he look confident?"
--He did, but drops continue to be an issue.

Brent Axe@BrentAxeMedia10m
"Where are the most obvious areas for a freshman to come in and contribute immediately."
--I really don't see one to be honest

That's what I like to see. Former players should be welcomed back with open arms.

Morris apparently looked really good too considering PTG was out of practice so he got a lot of reps.

There he is to the right. Great to see him still around and welcomed.
