Syracuse football: With Villanova a week away, what are you most/least confident about? (PS: Axe)

From the last part of the article: on the need to forget, forget the interception, the mistake, the blunder. In football, as in life, important to learn from your mistakes, but to focus on what you learned, not how you failed; also important to learn from your victories, not to revel in joy, but to focus on what you did right. Choices and execution and balance are everything in creating a successful life. If you have not been married as long as I have, you may not yet know the importance of that combination.

i think the dline will be spotty. but much more worried about teams that pound it than the teams that spread it out.

I'm most concerned that the freakin STARTING QB, hasn't even won the right to his own #.

Total bush league.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the bush leagues wouldn't even allow that.

Pathetic.

At the end of last season Hunt was far from our biggest concern and after a good spring, summer and fall, he will be even less of a concern. He has some people now that can get open and actually catch the ball.

I'm concerned that our defensive system of blitzing and attacking will once again expose our thin secondary, especially our corners. Our defense can be very fun to watch but we have to be more solid...we give up way too many long pass plays. With a reduced push from the front four, our corners this year might be even more vulnerable.

Most confident about our whole team
Least confident/concerned for our opponents

Most confident: offensive line

Least confident: George McDonald as a coordinator.

I hope the speed of his play calling increases this year. As far as his play calls, only he knows what he's trying to attack and/or expose.

I've spent time in a film room with GMcD, I know his concepts. He's got a very sound football mind. I think it's just a matter of learning to translate it to the field. Expect significant improvement this year.

Without our blitzing linebackers, you leave the offense more time to pick apart the corners. Our defense forces offenses to make decisions quickly.

The only real long pass plays we gave up were against Minnesota, FSU, Clemson and one against BC which should never have happened. Most of those happened because Wilkes was spying in the backfield looking for the run hanging our corners out to dry. He was pretty well known for doing this.

Hold it Scotty, there may be intelligent life here after all!

Id Say their are three things that will define our season

1) CB- how they hold up will be key. They are asked to play a lot of man and be on an island with all the blitzing and their is not a lot of depth at that position. Im very concerned about this.

2)DT- From all accounts, the interior line is not that great. Bromley was a huge loss, no one will be able to replace him but who will be able to take on the double teams and prevent inside running lanes. Who is going to get penetration on passing plays? Stopping the run will be key.

3) McDonald- Improved last year when Lester went up and worked with him. But will the communication improve? Way too many false starts to start the year last year and just all around disorganization. There didnt seem to be much of a plan to attack people. Will they play at a faster pace and be successful with it?

I think these are the 3 keys to the season. Some will disagree, but I feel pretty confident about the rest of the team. These could be the x-factors that decides whether we are 5-7 or 9-3 at the end of the season.

Most: Not running out of beer while tailgating, got it covered.

Least: Students staying past halftime on a Friday night.

Joking aside, i think our offense is going to be really good, I am concerned about the interior DL as is everyone else. When the DL coach says nobody is emerging as a clear cut starter it makes you wonder. Unfortunately I don't think they will be tested against Nova or for that matter CMU, we won't know really until MD and I'm just hoping that we get it figured out by then.

Is Sugar Bear permanently a tackle or was that just because of Crume and Sloan having been injured? To me, Thompson seems like a pure edge rusher. With his burst, he could be a weapon on sure passing downs.
