Specific to Minny -- they also turned the ball over 4 times that day.  Obviously them scoring 2 TDs on us directly off of fumbles was freakish, but it's not like we didn't have a s-ton of chances to overcome that.  Those were just 14 of the 35 points they scored that day, and it was a lousy Gopher team, let's be real.
 
I have contended for years that a big reason why P became unpopular, relatively speaking, was because after 1992 he didn't have signature season where SU had as little as a faint national title hope in even late September.  We [I]always[/I] started the season with a loss, or 2, or 3, early on.  It repeatedly killed bandwagon interest in the program.  I suppose that was entirely on the players and never on the head coach, because apparently we only played dramatically more-talented teams in those years.  But it still hurt the program.
