The Syracuse track and field teams head to Tallahassee, Florida for the ACC Championships beginning on Thursday.

Ranking the Orange
- The Syracuse men enter the ACC Championship with its highest ranking in program history at No. 19
- 'Cuse competes without throwers and a limited roster of jumpers and still enters the weekend as the third-highest ranked team in the ACC.
- This is in large part due to the strong distance program head coach Chris Fox has built. The Syracuse cross country team won its fifth conference title in six seasons this year and finished fifth at the NCAA Championship.

Knight Time
- Rookie Justyn Knight has made an immediate impact nationally, despite racing just twice thus far collegiately.
- The Vaughan, Ontario native has set school records in both of his meets this year -- each of which stood for over-25 years, including shattering a 52-year old Canadian Junior Record in the 5k at the Payton Jordan Invitational
- Knight has earned ACC Track Performer of the Week honors after both of his appearances this season.
- He was also the top-rookie at the ACC Cross Country Championships and earned gold in the Pan-Am Games for Team Canada in cross country.

Hail Hehir
- Martin Hehir has continued his standout season into the outdoor campaign.
- The ACC Cross Country and 5000-meter Indoor Champion, Hehir has been crowned an AllAmerican twice thus far in 2014-15.
- Hehir owns the nation's second-fastest time in the 10k (28:27.70) and eight-fastest time in the 5k so far this year (13:35.70). He's the top-qualifier in the 10k and second behind teammate Justyn Knight in the 5k this weekend.
- He also has stood out in the classroom, earning ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both cross country and indoor track and was a Soladay Award nominee at Syracuse, which is considered the top award a student-athlete can achieve.

Malone Alone at the Top
- Margo Malone is the Orange's top female qualifier this weekend, owning the ACCs top-time in the 10k by over 30 seconds.
- Malone was an NCAA Championships qualifier in the event last season and owns the sixthbest time nationally this season (32:29.89), which she set at the Stanford Invitational.

Distance is Key
- For the Orange to have a strong showing this weekend in Talahassee, it'll be on the backs of the distance runners.
- The Syracuse men have the top-three qualifiers in the 10k (Martin Hehir, Dan Lennon and Reed Kamyszek), with Philo Germano sitting in 10th. 4Syracuse also has four of the top-10 5k runners as well, with Justyn Knight and Hehir owning the top-two times, followed by Colin Bennie (6th) and Joel Hubbard (10th).
- The same can be said for the women, who own three of the top times in the 10k, with Margo Malone (1st), Maura Linde (4th) and Jessie Petersen (5th) leading the pack

Harrison A Title Hopeful
- The ACC Indoor Champion in the 60-meter dash, Shaina Harrison is looking for her second ACC Championship of the year in the 100-meter dash.
- She is the No. 2 qualifier in the 100-meters at 11.56 seconds, which she set at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational.
- Harrison won Syracuse its first women's ACC Championship in any sport since joining the conference at the indoor championships this season.

Pollitt and Crittenden Hurdling the Competition
- Donald Pollitt and Freddie Crittenden are the 'Cuse men's top-two hurdlers, but also rank near the top of the ACC.
- Pollitt is the top-seed in the men's 110-meter hurdles and is looking to rebound after missing the national qualifying time by one tenth of a second in the indoor season.

Assault on the Record Books
- Syracuse runners have been shattering records left and right this season.
- Margo Malone (32:29.89) and Martin Hehir (28:27.70) each broke the 10k record at the Stanford Invitational.
- Justyn Knight broke the 5k (13:34.86) and 1500-meter (3:39.66) school records.
- During the indoor season, Rebecca Robinson broke the 400-meter record (54.12 seconds), Hehir also took the mile (3:59.81) and 3000-meter (7:53.15) records.

Orange Shows Distance Dominance on Day 1 of ACC Championships

The Syracuse track team announced its presence in a big way on the opening night of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with Margo Malone taking the gold in the women's 10,000 meters and the men putting three in the top-five of the same event in the only final of night one of the meet in Talahassee, Florida.

Both teams currently sit in second place overall.

Malone broke off in a group of three with Liz Westphal of Boston College and Notre Dame's Molly Seidel near the 10-minute mark of the race, easily separating themselves from the rest of the field. The lead pack stayed tight for the remainder of the race until Malone made her move with two laps remaining.

She jumped from third position out in front and neither of the other two in the lead pack were able to answer her pace for the final 800-meters.

Malone, who took second at the ACC Cross Country Championships, entered the meet with the league's best time and cruised to a Mike Long Track record time of 33:33.69.

"I just tried to stay calm and run my race," Malone said. "Then I heard coach say 'be brave' and I made my move."

Malone was also followed by a trio of teammates, Shaylyn Tuite took fifth with a time of 34:44.12 – a personal best – with Maura Linde (36:13.56) in 13th and Rebecca Skodis (37:17.50) taking 18th, which was also a personal best.

On the men's side, Dan Lennon made a strong push gold, but fell on the final lap to Louisville's Ernest Kibet. Still, Lennon's silver in a time of 29:43.84 led a strong Syracuse contingent in the men's 10k. Colin Bennie took bronze in a time of 29:43.84 and Reed Kamyszek finished fifth at 30:02.12.

Philo Germano (11th/30:35.43) and Kevyn Hoyos (15th/31:24.55) rounded out the five Syracuse runners in the top-15 on the event.

The men's and women's 10000-meters were the only finals on night one of the meet, but freshman Justyn Knight turned in a strong performance in the 1500-meters to safely move himself into Saturday's final.

Knight, who will have two championships to contend for in a matter of hours on Saturday night, kept his pace steady and controlled as he won the fourth heat and subsequent berth into the finals with a time of 3:45.06. His preliminary time was the fourth fastest in the event.

Teammate Joseph Kush finished with a time of 3:47.12, just missing the cut to the finals. While 12 runners advance to the finals and Kush posted the 12th best time, finishing in the top-two of each heat comes with an automatic bid to the finals. The two competitors from heat one will advance ahead of Kush, despite running slower times.

In the only field event that Syracuse had a competitor in on Thursday, Reggie Morton finished 16th in the long jump with a mark of 6.50 meters.

Friday's track action will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the hurdles. Syracuse's Donald Pollitt (first) and Freddie Crittenden (third) are two of the top-qualifiers in the men's 110-meter hurdles. ESPN3 will once again begin broadcasting the event at 7 p.m.

Knight Wins Gold in the 1500-meters at ACC Championships

Orange finish strong on final day of ACC Championships

Freshman Justyn Knight brought home a gold medal in the 1500-meters in his debut performance at the ACC Track and Field Championships.

The rookie finished the race with just one shoe after losing one late in the race, en route to a first-place finish with a time of 3:47.85.

The win continued a string of dominance for Knight, who has competed just three times individually for the Orange in his career, setting a pair of school records and now taking an ACC Championship in his freshman campaign.

The Orange also got points from the 110-meter hurdles, with Freddie Crittenden (13.74) and Donald Pollitt (14.06) taking third and fourth respectively in the event.

Another podium finish for Syracuse came from Shaina Harrison, who finished second in the 100-meter dash. Harrison's time of 11.36 was just .12 behind Sabria Hadley of Clemson, who took gold.

Jessie Petersen brought home a bronze in the 5000-meters for the Orange, finishing in 16:13.60.

On the men's side of the event, Martin Hehir and Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin continued their rivalry, with Curtin taking this round of the 5000-meters after Hehir bested him in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Hehir finished in 14:00.63, just over 1 second behind Curtin. Max Straneva took fifth for the Orange, crossing the line in 14:15.84.

Other strong performances by 'Cuse from members of the squad who fell short of the podium began in the afternoon with Regine Hunter taking sixth in the triple jump. She leaped to a distance of 12.35 meters.

In the 4x100-meter relays, the Syracuse women took seventh (45.43) and the men finished in eighth (41.31).

At the end of the night, the Syracuse men finished in seventh overall (51 points) while the women's 33 points was good for 10th – a strong performance from both, especially factoring in that neither team competes with throwers and a limited jumpers roster.

Next, members of the Orange who qualified will participate in the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida, beginning on May 28.
