The obvious - if you can get to one of our away tailgates, you should. 7.5-hour drive up from Atlata Friday night. Freeway closure on I-75 and a persistent drizzle from Chattanooga to Murfeesboro slowed the trip. Got to the hotel at 02:00. Up at 09:00 for the tailgate. Kudos to the organizers. The dogs were plentiful and delicious. Location was an A+. I spent a goodly amount of time talking to a guy before the game who was not a die-hard SU fan (yet), but whose daughter was a freshman in Newhouse this year. He is an Illinois grad and lives near Lexington now. We talked hoops and football tradition, and he was surprised to realize how many name-brand football players we've had. Never connected the dots. This was my first time at Louisville's stadium, and it strikes me as a nice-enough building, but it is not a college stadium. It reminded me of Raymond James, a big, soulless hole. Their fans generally ignored us. The guy selling beer in our section was relentless, up and down the aisle all game. He frequently obstructed my view. And when he set his tray down, folks piled up around it, making things worse. Sight lines were good, and you aren't as far from the field as you are at Clemson or Auburn. Good to see tomcat at the tailgate, to meet JackBauer44, and to hear Orangejet's continuous analysis of our program and coaching staff throughout the game. Good times at the after-tailgate and wing feast at Roosters with TexanMark, Orangello, JackBauer44, and a couple soon-to-be board members. As for the game, meh. All things considered, I would have been content with this year if we didn't make a bowl, as long as we were building and improving. It looks like we are regressing. I stayed to the end, so I got to see the hit on Dungey. It was loud, a big crack up in the 2nd deck. They had already taken Estime off kickoffs. Why Dungey was still in there I have no idea. I think I have seen enough of the current staff. Not all are bad, but there is enough bad to color the entire endeavor. Make no mistake, though, if we fire Shafer this year and hire an offensive-minded, spread-philosophy coach, I will expect instant results, and will be on the case from day 1. It's only fair.
