I'm bumping this thread up because it was pointed out to me that there were SU players who played in the pros who were not listed as draftees or free agents on the above list, (the example given was Dwayne Joseph). I decided to look through the "Orange in Professional Footbal"l section of the Media Guide and compare it to "SU Draft Selections and Free Agents" section. to see what players are in the first but not in the second. Here is what I came up with: Nick Bruckner played for the 1983-87 Jets. He was a letterman in 1982. Ted Cirillo played in the USFL in 1983. He was a letterman in 1981-82. Giovanni DeLoatch played in something called "AF2" which is the Arena Football Leagues developmental league, in 2005. I guess that's the lowest level of pro football you could find but, hey- it's "the next level". He was a letterman in 200o-2001, (but I'll never forget him rumbling 27 yards to score with a fumble in the epic rout of Miami in 1998). Donald Dinkins played in the Arena League in 2002. He had lettered in 1997-99. Jameel Dumas plyed in NFL Europe in 2006-07. He had lettered in 2000-2003. Kevin J. Green, (the kicker: we had a runner in the same era named Kevin D. Green) played in the Arena league in 1992-93. He ahd lettered in 1988. Marucs Hackett played in the USFLin 1984. He had lettered in 1980, (not 1981) and 1982-83. Jose Harris played in "AFL2", which appears to be the same thying as "AF2") in 2009. He had lettered for SU way back in 2002. Dwayne Joseph played for the 1994-1997 Chicago Bears after lettering in 1990-1993. I'm not sure what he wasn't in the "SU Draft Selections and Free Agents" section, since he must have been won or the other to nplay in the NFL a year after he left SU. Eugene Newsome also played in AFL2 in 2009. he had lettered in 2006-07. Alonzo Jamel Riddle played in the CFL in 2006-07 after lettering in 2001-02. Guy Ruff played for the 1982 Pittsburgh Steelers after having letterred at SU in 1981. He's another one that probably should have been listed in both sections. Mike Siano, who made the big catch in the Nebraska game played for the Eagles in 1987. He had lettered in 1982-85. Richie Simpkins played in the Arena League from 2002-2008 after lettering at SU in 1998-2000. Willie Sydnor played for the 1982 Steelers after lettering for SU in 1981. He, too must have been a draftee or free agent but is not so listed in the Media Guide. Nate Trout was in AF2 in 2002 after kicking for SU in 1996-1999. Keon Walker was in AF2 in 2004 after lettering in 1999-2002. Jason Walters played in the Arena League in 1999-2004 after lettering at SU in 1994-1997. Thomas Whitfield played in the CFL in 2005-2007 after lettering at SU in 2005-2007. Warren Harvey played in the USFL in 1983 but he lettered at Syracuse in 1976-79 and I'm only looking at the Carrier Dome Era. The mystery man is Emile Palmer, who played for the Bears in 1998 and NFL Europe in 1997-99. He's not listed as a letterman. I'm missing some Media Guides from 1992-1994 but he was true freshman in 1991. Upperdeck's site lists him as a redshirt freshman in 1992 and then nothing. So I guess he enver lettered. I've never been sure what you have to do to get a letter but in this list I'm going under the assumption that if you didn't letter you didn't contribute very much to that year's team, (even if you did score a touchdown on a fumble return vs. Miami, as Giovanni DeLoatch did), so I'm leaving you off the list for that year. I'll do the same with Emile Palmer. Sorry, Emile. Most of these guys were barely playign at "the next level" after their SU careers- in some cases a while later. But the idea is that if they did play on the next level, they must have been good college players, so i'll add them to the list. "AFL will mean they played in the Arena League or AF2. "CFL" means they played in Canada. "NFLE" will be NFL-Europe. "USFL" will be the Untied States Football League. The players who played in the NFL but were not listed in the "Draft Selections and free Agents" seciton will be designated as "NFL". I'll put Joseph, Ruff and Sydnor there, even though they probalby should have been listed in both sections. The Media Guide also has a section on awards SU players have won in the pros. It shows pro bowlers, (they bowl, too?), All- AFC and NFC teams, All pro teams, All rookie teams, And various individual awards, including NFC player of the year, (Donovan McNabb, 2000, and the Golden Toe award, (Gary Anderson, 1998- did he use his toe?). Nobody else in the Carrier Dome era has won one of those individual awards. The All-Conference teams seem similar to the Pro Bowl designations, (and they are essentially the same players), so I'll consider them an equal designation. "All-Pro" would be a little above that so I'll give a player "PB" if they made the Pro Bowl or the All-Conference team but "AP" if they made the All-Pro team. "POY" will be player of the year and "GT" golden toe, (not Gerogia Tech).
