So I've been reading in threads since halftime of the game that we shouldn't be surprised by what was happening/happened. Which is very strange to me if you read the prediction thread but anyway. So one of the interesting reasons I keep seeing thrown out there from time to time is:

USF has better athletes than we do, and are more athletic.

If this is true, we're in trouble.

Its just an easy go to excuse like they are "FASTER THAN WE ARE". No, we failed execute and our defensive game plan appeared to be garbage. I still can't believe how bad we are at defending a mobile QB. It renders our entire blitz scheme useless, and we rely on it. We can't afford to play conservatively on offense and thats exactly what we did for more than half of the game.

Referencing the prediction thread doesn't help your argument. It is for fun. Some use it for 'legitimate' predictions, others use it to have fun. I never pick SU to lose in those threads. If we were playing the GB Packers, I would pick us to win.

It wasn't the score predictions, although I try to predict what I think will actually happen, it was the feeling on the board overall the entire week that USF had almost no chance to beat us.

I get that. They were. I was just referring the prediction thread reference.

I'm not surprised that a young team struggled in its first road game. Was hoping the extra prep for the bye week would have mitigated that, but it didn't.

I agree that people are over rating USF's talent. We just played poorly.

Whether on offense or defense, speed to the corners was evidently in their favor. Not hard to see if you see the game a second or third time. Half a step is all it takes. Let's be realistic. We need faster defensive backs/corners.

I always say that when you match second and third recruits from SU's recruiting region against similarly rated recruits from Florida, the team with the Florida kids is going to win most of the time.

How would some of the best high school football teams from the northeast match up on a regular basis against the best teams from Florida?

That would be a valid argument if our team was mainly made up of what would be deemed Northeastern players. Our most important playmakers are mostly from PA or south, or west. Also, based on that logic, we would normally lose to any team from Florida.

If we should expect to lose to USF every year, than what's the point in fielding a team.

Syracuse and USF are in the same ballpark talent wise; at least according to the recruiting sites.

That last point has many faces.

But you wouldn't know it the way they ran to the corners and ran past us.

That's good for the fan base. That's the fun of following a team. I don't feel bad for thinking highly of the team - and I hate to lose.

It's amazing how much faster the very same players look when they know what the they're doing.

We simply don't have the depth yet. The upperclassmen are still Big East recruits and our ACC recruits are just pups.

USF prob does have better athletes than us but Bullough's in ability to scheme against a mobile QB was the real problem

Accumulative advantage. Even if are recruiting the same talent, in theory we should still have the advantage at the end of the day. Better coaching, ACC competition, IPF, etc.

This is exactly what I'm saying though. I thought our goal was moving towards top 25 and if we're chalking this game up to, they have similar or better talent. We are in trouble moving forward. I'm not saying that's the case but if that's the excuse by some people, that's a scary thought.

So spend game week discussing dream scenarios instead of what we actually think could happen? Seems weird but I guess to each their own.

Our team is mostly healthy, so depth is less of an issue.
On defense, we have 8 new starters this season; our starting safeties are both young and small.
USF could run the ball, and SU could not. It wasn't only schemes.

Cmon. That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying the high coming off of LSU was and is good for us. It was fun.

This week is entirely different. I'm hopeful we'll play better - but there is a lot of stuff to fix and hence - stuff to talk about.

Huh? If thats the case USF upperclassman are also BE recruits and their AAC recruits are just pups. This makes zero sense.

Our talents is fine, our experience isn't, yet. This season's going to have peaks and valleys of with the youth out there.

Every win does not put us in Playoffcontention just as each loss doesn't take away bowl eligibility.

A season is a long time and each game is its own individual event. Get to work for Virginia, let's stay well ahead of .500.

All of these posts smell like convenient excuses, IMO.
Bottom line, we laid a massive egg, were outplayed & out coached, and whatever air we had after LSU was quickly deflated.
It's EXTREMELY troublesome, IMO, that we looked as bad as we did. To come out so unprepared on defense & ultra conservative on offense, was frankly, very surprising.
I don't think there's any way to sugarcoat things & most of the posts are simply trying to process the implications, both good & bad, of such a horse$&%# performance. JMHO

I thought they had more talent than we did. It's not the reason we lost it's just something i noticed. their kids seemed a little bigger and a little faster.
