Temple had Fran as a finalist when Manny Diaz backed out and went back to Miami. They ended up going with Rod Carey who had huge success at Northern Illinois. 52-30 with 6 bowl bids. He gets the Temple job and promptly goes 12-20 and gets chitcanned.

I view this very similar to our situation where we could have hired Chez or Candle. Not saying they wouldnt have worked out here.

Fran Brown is a gamble.

Let's hope it pays off.

Yep...good point. We can view that situation two ways. Is it a negative that FB didn't get the job or did Temple screw up the hire. Fact is the guy they went with was terrible at Temple and he's a good football coach who had great success at NIU. But he didn't have any NE ties. His entire career had NEVER brought him east of Illinois.

This is a really great post that shows how much of a crap shoot all of this is. I mean if Coach P wins the recruitment of Mike V, history changes for him/us as well. Really great post that puts all of this into perspective. Theres so many variables that equate to the level of success.

Big time gamble, I think it can really pay off since he nails the recruiting piece we've been missing forever.
It's going to be huge we can a top 25-30 OC and DC to make sure the X's and O's are covered.

Coach P was in our coaches office and said..."We have the QB we need and won't skip a beat.". That sucked when Vick went to VT.

I think the bigger similarity is well North of Philly.

Small private school with a HC who has been around awhile but isn’t going anywhere. Gets you to a bowl with a boring O. You move onto a well known recruiter who was mainly a DB coach and is coming from a major program and has Rutgers ties.

The prior situation the recruits did not follow. Hopefully our situation is not the same.

It's difficult to learn from others failures.

Yeah but the local dog population would go down

Then they hired Drayton, who is recruiter/position coach like Brown and he is 6-18 as their coach.

Temple made that call in 2019. Fran was only 36 then. He has since worked a couple of years each at Rutgers and Georgia.

At this point, he is a lot better positioned for the HC job than he was then.
