The No. 53 Syracuse tennis team defeated Cornell 5-2 in its home opener, and moved to 4-1 on the season on Saturday afternoon at Drumlins Tennis Center.
'Cuse picked up the doubles point for the first time in three matches and the first singles match to go up 2-0.
Valeria Salazar defeated Lizzie Stewart 6-1, 6-1 to take the first match.
Breanna Bachini fought through a tie breaker to defeat Priyanka Shah in the first set to win 7-5 (7-4), and finished strong with a 6-1 win in the second set.
Amanda Rodgers also rallied through a tie breaker to seal the victory for Syracuse with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Dena Tanenbaum, while
Rhiann Newborn won her match via retirement over Marika Cusick.
Cornell answered with a win in the second match, as Jane Stewart defeated
Nicole Mitchell 6-2, 6-0.
Komal Safdar fell to Alex D'Ascenzo 7-6, 6-3.
In doubles play, the tandem of
Amanda Rodgers and
Rhiann Newborn defeated Dena Tanenbaum and Lizzie Stewart 6-2, and No. 59

Komal Safdar rallied through a tie breaker to defeat Marika Cusick and Alex D'Ascenzo 7-6 (4-0).
Nicole Mitchell and Briana Bachini lost to Priyanka Shah and Jane Stewart 6-1.
The Orange will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 7 when they take on Albany at home, with the match set to start at 11 a.m.
