Maryland’s football season ticket sales are down 18 percent from a year ago, one last lingering hit for the cash-strapped athletic department from a rough 2011 on the field.

According to department figures, the Terrapins had sold 16,241 season tickets through Friday, down from 19,892 a year ago. The shrinking base comes in the wake of the Terrapins’ 2-10 record a year ago

I'm sure a 2-10 record is a factor but don't under estimate how a sustained dismal economy factors into these numbers. I have friends that didn't renew this year because of financial reasons.

Hi! You plant corn, you get corn.

Even in the DC Metro area? That's the one region that's been fairly bulletproof in all of this.

This news probably has the Dude of WV and his fanboys salivating. In his universe the more desperate Maryland becomes to move on to the B1G and -- and this is really the most impoirtant thing -- hurt the ACC.

nah - it's called a BORING brand of football

Washington State has sucked for a long time and that part of Washington isn't doing as well economically as the DC Metro - but do you think they're having trouble selling seasons tickets with Leach as their new coach as opposed to Randy frickin Edsall?

crappy offense + losing record(s) = lower ticket sales

there's just no way around that fact

and yes - I see a parallel to what has been happening in Syracuse

SU can go 7-5 this year, carried by the defense - but if the offense is a dumpster fire again ticket sales will continue to slump even while winning

This year the Terps are forced to start a QB who never has taken a live snap at the college level. So on top of last year's crappy performance, I doubt the optimism is gushing from the UMD faithful. Let's not even talk about those butt-ugly uniforms.

I don't buy the "dismal economy" excuse for one second. UMD has a deal like SU where fans can get season tickets for as little as $114. Unless someone is unemployed (in which case you'd have to ask why they should even be considering the luxury of season tickets), most economic factors that affect the average worker - rate of inflation (<2%), stock market performance, historically low interest rates, tax rate and home prices - are in decent shape.

Yeah, I don't buy economy either since both the Nats and O's attendance figures are up pretty dramatically (despite the O's embarrassing crowd of 10K on Monday). The Ravens and Skins will have no ticket sales problems. I doubt there will be empty seats when the Terps are playing hoops either. People weren't excited for Edsall on Day 1 and 2-10 did little to generate excitement for this year.

SU doesn't look so bad by comparison, does it?

(he says, to people who only look at us in a vaccum and never use that little thing called context)

Very good points.

The Skins had to take out thousands of seats in that crap-hole they play in, their season ticket waiting list is one of the biggest myths in sports.

Gotta wonder though, with UMD sandwiched inbetween the Ravens and the Skins stadiums (and them doing a stadium expansion that wasn't needed) if there just isn't enough to spread around to them for Saturdays.

When they fired Freidgen, they needed a splash hire like a Leach to offset and they hired Edsall, piss poor move

I think I read that they installed field turf at Byrd stadium for this year. I guess that's not a big enough "splash".

you can't hire a guy who made a guy sit in a shed

(even though the shed is probably bigger than my house. people made it out like he tied him up and locked him in some 4 by 6 rubbermaid home depot closet shed)
