I don't recall LSU, was that an unlikely run for them?  I do remember Pearl at UT and having some success. Even so, I don't recall the SEC back then being viewed as a conference on par with the ACC, let alone superior to them.  Although, without going back to actually check, I don't know off the top of head as SU being in the Big East then, I didn't pay much attention.  However, I'd have to imagine with the ACC typically being very strong and routinely thought of as/one of the best hoops conferences, that the ACC was still considered better overall, at least during the regular season.  Regardless of those unexpected/unforeseen deep NCAA tourney runs from those aforementioned SEC teams.
