No, I'm not talking about Cubit. That would be just absolutely horrible. Illinois has fired/not renewed the contract of ST Coordinator Tim Salem. Illinois ranked 46th nationally in Special Teams efficiency rating.

Syracuse? Ranked 118 out of 128 despite having a very good punter and an adequate place kicker, which means its a failure in scheme on both coverage and returns.

Special Teams make a huge, huge difference in starting field position and ultimately scoring and we were horrible at both last year. It is as big of an improvement need as OLine and almost as big as QB play. This guy can presumably fix that. Tim Salem previously coached RB at Illinois and TE and even was OC at UCF. At UCF he boasted one of the top 5 kick return units in the nation in 2011. In 2010, UCF was #2 special teams unit in the country, 1st in KO returns, 12th in punt returns, and 3rd in kick return defense.

I'd find out why he's out at Illinois and if there are no red flags, I'd hire him in a second to coach ST and TE and move Acosta to WR. Then I'd find myself a significant upgrade in experience and proven success on OL and let Adam go.

I think that would just leave us with Lester in Fla.

If that guy was OC at UCF, he must have some connections in FL, but if they are only around Orlando that would overlap Lester's area.

Sounds like a plan. I am willing to give the argument about a ST coach a shot since we have not tried that to date. Something's not working, why not try something different?

Dangit!!! I apologize to anyone that read the title to mean he is headed to SU. I swear I typed "is free to come to SU". I know of no connection to SU, no inquiry or contact. I'd be for it, though.

I'm in favor of it. As many don't care for special teams, I for one realize the importance of it and think it would be a great hire if it were to work out. And there is nothing wrong with too many recruiters in Florida as long as they can seal the deal. :)
