That Uconn loss has aged as well as we thought it would
You are right about UConn never being considered. One of the factors has been the matter of the Big East law suit that was filed against the ACC and ACC brass individually led by the CT Attorney General Blumenthal (Now Senator Blumenthal recently exposed for lyng about his service in Vietnam.) Other Big East schools signed on t0 the suit, but UConn led the charge claiming that the recent investments they had made upgrading from 1-AA were at risk. Universities suing other universities was unheard of at the time. A guy I knew who was the chief counsel for a local university told me it seemed "crazy". This lawsuit failed resulting in huge legal bills for the Big East universities. But most importantly it created a reservoir of hurt feelings and anger especially at BC. For some reason this law suit has left UConn with the Mark of Cain. It certainly isn't the only factor, but it is A factor.
