I'll be making a series of posts on the failed attempts to win the Triple Crown over the last 35 years, with the center piece being the original broadcast, if I can find it on You-Tube. Here is the 1979 Belmont:
With three Triple Crown winners int he previous six years, people expected this to be a coronation and for Spectacular Bid to take his place along side Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed. it didn't happen.
One reason may be a wound Bid got from, of all things, a safety pin in his hoof the morning of the race. He didn't seem to be limping, so they didn't withdraw from the race. Ron Franklin's ride was also controversial. Some thought they, (Franklin and the trainer Bud Delp) were trying to duplicate Secretariat by taking control early and then lengthening the lead. But they ran out of horse.
I wish they still played "the Sidewalks of New York"...
