Seems like we can score points with interchangeable parts. QB's, RB's, Wr's are all seemingly interchangeable. The scheme is good and we will score points.

Defensively, we are a mess. We need to do what Marrone did and try to get our best athletes on defense. Move some guys around if possible. Best thing Marrone did was take Hogue and Smith and move them to LB. Not to say we have those guys. But we need to add talent to our D.

Yes -- and it would help if the sub QB wasn't throwing interceptions, lateral passes that can be run back for TDs, and making pitches getting his RB creamed. So, you need to have a legit offense, with a running game, and more weapons. Not easy -- need a lot, in most units of the team.

Great post. Let’s face it, if there is a less talented team in the ACC then us, I haven’t seen them

dont blame the QB for the missed block by the WR.. that play was perfectly set up for an easy 7-10 yds but Custis missed the block

And, at the same token, you need a defense that doesn't give up huge play gains week after week, not to mention a back that this week has over 130 yards rushing in the first half. Last week, over 400 yards rushing that would've been far worse had UL not take out their QB and first team-ers in the 3Q. Additionally, there was that Wake game where our D look as if they had never heard of, let alone ever seen the zone read...

Don't disagree with that. But the offense put up only 3 points in the second half of Wake, and did not show up at Louisville. It isn't just the defense that needs some big help.

Depth. Defense needs depth.

I'm not a believer in robbing the offense to get it though.

Absolutely. Look what happened when the 2 starting safeties went down.

Most of our freshman and sophomores should not be on the 2 deep. Look at any team we played this year. The majority across the board are upper classmen. Big difference between a 23 yo man and a 18-19 year old kid.

Haven’t been able to watch but it seems like the defense has a lack of effort. Wondering if a guy like slayton played safe to avoid injury. That would signal that he’s looking to test the waters. Any insight?

Slayton did well. Got lots of deep penetration for a NT. It's not lack of effort...

We kinda are getting an overhaul. We redshirted a bunch on defense if I remember correctly.

We need to stop playing Tampa 2. Tampa 2 is supposed to be good against offenses like ours (supposedly ...Hi Wake), but not many play offense like we play it.

We have been saying that for many years now. I am starting to believe there is more to it. The degree to which we suck late in every season is shocking. If we can't recruit enough players to play the scheme, change the scheme.
There is...

They scaled down the Tampa 2 and had fruitful results through 9.5 games. Something happened where they just regressed. Maybe going to a 4-3 is what they need to do. Ward definitely has to amend for this.

This thread started when SU had 14 points on passes to Ishmael & Phillips -- offense was OK in yards, but not enough points.

tampa 2 had nothing to do with the issues today. case in pt bennett and franklin both being in the same hole and missing the tackle on Dillon in the first half.. Our 280 LB FB getting met in the hole by a 180 lb kid and getting stood up in the 2nd half.. there were missed plays for sure, but most of our issues were missed tackles and blown assignments way more than tampa 2.

Offense only looks good in the box score, assuming you don’t scroll through far enough to look at the points scored, yards per play, and scoring red zone.

I get that. This is why I'm such a big proponent of redshirting.

We have two problems. We haven't brought in enough talent recruiting. And we haven't given the players time to develop before pressing them into action.

Those don't get solved overnight. We bandage it with JUCOs and 5th years, but that's not solving the root issues.

Without those JUCOs, Babers' 2017 recruiting class would have been dead last in the ACC. Recruit dead last, play dead last. Not much different now except for a couple of OLs who will not help next year. Babers will have to recruit as many solid JUCOs again now, and dump roster players if that's what it takes.

Certainly, but I think the issue is whether or not we can recruit the elite pass rushers needed to make the system work. They are perhaps the most difficult recruits to land.
