The bad news is the basketball team lost. The good news is

And here I thought you were going to post about some school going to BiG10!:)

As much as I don't mind watching basketball & lacrosse - I am really excited for football season to start - the ACC is so much better for football, not so much for basketball (almost a push).

Football! :). Damn though, I had them winning it... In the bracket thing. Can you tell I do not know much about Basketball?

What debate? Syracuse is and always will be a football school.

Listen, I love SU football just as much as I love SU basketball. It can be argued that SU has a longer and more storied history in football than in basketball. But about the only people who would argue that SU is a football school are the ones who post on this forum.

If there was a national poll on whether you would consider SU a football school or a basketball school, the overwhelming (something like 90%) majority would say basketball school. Hell, that poll would probably have the same results if done only in Syracuse.

This is really a worthless debate though. Why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't it be both? Or does one side have to prove that they are "better" than the other somehow?

Hey, pal--you're not alone! :p

The majority would be wrong. But I agree it's a worthless debate and we can be strong in both.

Yes.

I love Syracuse football with every fiber of my being (and I hate SU basketball fans who badmouth the football team), but what are you basing that conclusion on? By what metric is Syracuse football superior to Syracuse basketball?

SU football has finished in the Top 10 of the AP poll exactly twice in the past half century. SU basketball has accomplished that twice since 2012.

IMHO Football > basketball (as a sport) Why I weigh in on the football side. That being said I know nationally/locally we are seen as a basketball school. I just hope Shafer can even it out a little. I think we are what we are in basketball, JB is going to take us to the dance every year with a chance to make the Final Four some years. That being said, Shafer has the opportunity to raise the bar big time for SU football. I hope he succeeds. Maybe I am being selfish. Whatever. LGO football...and then basketball! ;)

1) The entire reason we have the Dome, is football.

2) The entire reason that 44 means something, is football.

3) The most significant revenue generator for athletics, is football.

4) The whole reason that Syracuse has stayed a premier Division I athletics program, is because football has driven the bus for the last 100 years.

It's not even remotely close. Boeheim has even said it himself.

We're a football school with a good basketball team.

I may get into Syracuse basketball, but my first and true love will always be Syracuse Orangemen football.

the Dome, the Big East, Dave Gavitt and espn made us a basketball school.

Boeheim 'won 75 games in the 3 years before the bigeast and nobody cared'.

all the school ever did was maneuver to protect the football team.

sadly, we lost that distinction of at least being a 2 sport school.

its time to reclaim that.

Oh Lord

It's virtually the same - SU football made $19.1 million and SU basketball made $18.3 million in 2011 (the most recent year I could find).

I have lived most of my adult life away from Syracuse. One consistent thing I have noticed is that football fans over 30 remember Syracuse as a football school. Having lived in every Power 5 conference territory and living in some areas inundated with football tradition it is a great feeling to know your favorite team is respected. The older gents even showed some pity about the downturn with wishes for resurgence of our Orange!

These same people never revered Rutgers and UConn and Temple. WVU and VATech were mentioned but not like PSU, Syracuse and Pitt. Football fans know football history. Younger guys may need more education but I believe Scott Shafer and Co. are working on that.

Does that account for ACC television money?

We're a "Whatever team is winning School" - it's the nature of the fanbase. If the Basketball team had a couple of consecutive losing seasons, and had a couple of lousy recruiting classes, our basketball fanbase would wither on the vine just like the football fanbase did during the GRob years. The fan following of the programs at any given time is irrelevant.

If SU never built the Dome and made the decision to abandon or de-emphasize the football program in the late 70's, we'd be a basketball school ... in a Mid-Major conference right now.

We'd be Georgetown.

So, it's a good thing we are a football school. ;)

Great point - the football program is the difference between being in the ACC, and being Colgate.
