Unfortunately I'm beginning to see some of the 'no talent' excuses here that we saw during the first two or three seasons of the Gerg Era.

Now don't get me wrong - we can always afford to improve the talent level of this team. But talent isn't why this team was obliterated by a 3-3 squad last Saturday.

I know CBS Sports Prospect Rankings isn't the be-all end-all of scouting NFL prospects. And sure, a lot can change between now and next April. But it seems to be the most accurate and most cited website out there for evaluating college players.

According to the website Syracuse has the third-most Top 1,000 NFL prospects eligible for the 2014 Draft in the ACC. We also have more than Penn State and Northwestern. We are tied with the fourth-most players expected to be drafted (Top 253).

Marrone may have hated recruiting and wasn't very good at convincing kids and parents with many other (better) options to play for him. But he has great talent evaluation skills and his program developed raw athletes into good football players.

I'm hoping Shafer can continue that tradition. At the same time we can't give Shafer a pass with the Bare Cupboard excuse. Can the talent get better? Absolutely. I'm hoping Shafer and his staff can bring in even better football players.

But how much better can this program really get from a talent standpoint?

Here is the full list (Northwestern and Penn State included) in case you're interested (link)...

please don't take this as a criticism because i'm not sure how to improve on this aside from grouping players into position buckets, assigning some weights and then doing a weighted average.

but this year and 2005 seem to show that all it takes is a couple glaring holes to bring everything down. in both years it was QB and WR which is mind boggling considering that the dome should help us there

True but our QB and WR's didn't get steamrolled for 56 points on Saturday.

WR is a problem but I still think Hunt has potential. He was shellshocked against Clemson and needs to get himself together. Hopefully the week off will help.

i'm more fixated on the zero than the 56.

scoring 56 or more happened 79 times last year. out of 1675 records

getting shutout happened 36 times.

what we're seeing is so rare, however you wanna look at it. holy crap.

but i'm with you on defense. i put this on shafer and bullyuck

One thing I get out of this is that Jerome better come back to SU if he's no better than a 6th round draft pick. He's a good back but I think some peoples Orange colored glasses have elevated him in their mind when they think he'll leave early. He's not a 1st or 2nd round pick.
Also is doesn't surprise me that SU supposedly has more talent than NW. That's a coaching issue.

its never been officially retired- its a tried and true excuse for those always on the side of the coaching staff

im still not sure if shafer is the man or not-but i was sure about robinson by game 7 he wasnt -

The problem is the depth of the quality players in the program. We shouldn't be talking about true freshman losing their redshirt years unless they are unbelievable players. The starting lineup should be laced with seniors, juniors, and some sophomores. The second team should be pushing those starters for a starting position. The second team should be your juniors, sophomores, and rf freshman. Those second team players should be the special teams. The true freshman players should be redshirted unless they could possibly be first team. Don't waste a year so they can be on special teams.

Depth will make the team better because competition makes everyone a better player. Imagine if this team still had Alec Lemon, Brandon Sharpe, Zach Chibane, and Shamarko Thomas because all of them didn't have a redshirt year. It is only going to get worse next year with the Seniors because Bromley, Wales, Macky, Coker, Krautman, Wilkes, Rene, PTG, Flemming, Spruill, and Lyn all played as true freshman. Most of them started as true freshman.

How many people praise Boeheim for always being able to find the next go to player? He understands that the depth of the team makes the program better. Sometimes I feel that SU football has been on probation because of the coaching changes; the team loses players earlier(transfer), players leave earlier than expected (no redshirt), a year behind in recruiting always, and finally bringing in JUCOs which helps only for the now. Can't blame Shafer for this!

1,000 is far too big a number. Look at top 100 or top 300. Those are the guys that make a difference. Not Clay Cleveland because he is top 1,000 ( no knock on Clay).

no running back is a 1st or 2nd round pick, or at least they shouldn't be

if you can get drafted at RB, go. all another year gets him is more miles on the tires and more risk of injury.

Bare Cupboard excuse is a joke and has no credence. Shafer isn't taking over the program in shambles like Marrone did even though Robinson left Marrone some important pieces just like Marrone left Shafer a decent roster.

We are weak at QB, WR, DE, but that is it. I get that QB is the most important position, but the problem these past few games has been on defense against any QB that can pass the ball decently. Bare Cupboard excuse can only be given by people who are all in on Shafer which I honestly I don't know if we have that many in that camp.

The talent is there on this team to be competitive it is definitely not NC caliber or conference championship caliber but its middle of the conference bowl team caliber.

Well the number in parentheses is the Top 253 (approximate number of players drafted) and Syracuse is tied for 4th behind only FSU, Clemson, and UNC.

Syracuse has 1 Top 100 player, which is more than Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Boston College, Maryland, Wake Forest, NC State, Virginia, and Duke.

Not sure why you think 1,000 is too big a number - considering how often depth is brought up.

That 2005 defense that Greg took over did not have a bare cupboard either. McClain and Gregory are still in the league. Anthony Smith was a high draft pick. Wyche and LaCasse were more than capable ends. Tanard Jackson was on that team too- issues now but was good then. Now after that? Yes the cupboard did become bare. Much the same way your cupboards would be bare if you never went to the grocery store.

True but our QB and WR's didn't get steamrolled for 56 points on Saturday.

WR is a problem but I still think Hunt has potential. He was shellshocked against Clemson and needs to get himself together. Hopefully the week off will help.

Agree with Millhouse that the 0 concerns me more than the 56. I think the 56 will prove to be an anomaly. Doesn't mean our defense is issue-free, but I think the staff overthinking plan completely backfired and they know it. Go back to our base, and we should have better results against 4 of the 5 remaining teams.

The passing game situation is such a mess, they really have to fix it this week off. We'll play a team that it shouldn't be all that hard to pass against, or run against for that matter. Especially in our own building. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I'm favoring going back to Allen at QB. The OL has improved since Hunt took over, so maybe give him another game and see if he can settle in a little better. Worst case scenario, it's just more of the same.

but you watched Allen in the second half against GT, right?

I feel that there's clearly some talent on this roster.

Problem is, we're light on exceptional talent, and we're light on talent in some really key places (QB, DE).

Is the 56 an anomaly though?

Northwestern – 48
Clemson – 49
Georgia Tech – 56

Northwestern and Clemson let off the gas. GT was being gentlemanly by running the ball with their scout team and we still couldn’t stop them.

Bare Cupboard excuse is a joke and has no credence.
The cupboard is bare at QB this year. Hunt may be ready next year, but this year he's too green. McDonald may have issues with playcalling, and I'm not sure he thinks he should be tailoring the system to his players - seems more like he runs the system and if it doesn't work, well, that is what recruiting is for. But I think that on offense, the lack of talent at QB and WR is killing us. I am concerned about McDonald, but hold out hope he will learn and develop, and the man can recruit.

On D there is no talent excuse. I am not sold on Bullough. Wouldn't bat an eyelash if he was let go mid-season.

Well, maybe anomaly isn't the best word. But I really don't expect Wake, Maryland, Pitt or BC to score at will like the 3 who did (and FSU, who will). I do worry more about how we'll score against those teams. Because GT wasn't playing like a very good D. Certainly not one capable of a shutout against a 1A team like us.

but you watched Allen in the second half against GT, right?

No, only watched the 1st half. When I got home I deleted from the DVR. Maybe that's why I'm saying it. This is really hard!

their scout qb is awesome and our scout qb starts.

Unfortunately I'm beginning to see some of the 'no talent' excuses here that we saw during the first two or three seasons of the Gerg Era.

Thanks for the post and not to diminish the point you are making but boy, what s stupid list. Drew Alen and Rishard Anderson - really? We need whatever CBS is drinking.

No, only watched the 1st half. When I got home I deleted from the DVR. Maybe that's why I'm saying it. This is really hard!

You remember the offense in the first half against Northwestern, right? Change the jersey colors and that's exactly what it looked like.

but you watched Allen in the second half against GT, right?

I did and I thought he threw the ball pretty well considering there were 4 drops, each getting progressively worse.

You're kidding, right? He reminds me of batting practice--substitute his football release for a baseball pitch and opposing linemen's arms for bats--get the picture?
