This should be an eye opener for where we actually are on the CFB landscape.

TIER 5: PROGRAMS AT A SIGNIFICANT DISADVANTAGE

These programs have more weaknesses than strengths. Regular bowl play means you’re doing something good.

Syracuse: It has been a Top 20 program in the past. Up-state New York, winter snowstorms, and a meh crowd in a dome are a tough sell. Will be harder to win moving forward in a tougher conference.

Coaching matters a lot more for SU than talent. We need our staff to max out what we have.

I though we were all operating from this understanding?

How they have Miami in Tier 2 and Wisconsin in Tier 3 I don't understand. Seems backwards to me

We are, it just helps to be reminded on a daily basis of the reasons why we suck now but use to be good and will probably never be that good again. Good times, like I said being a Syracuse football fan is not for the squeamish. And again, nobody who posts here is the issue because if you care enough to post on a forum about a third rate football program for the last 15 years, you are whacked.

So welcome board.

So some 20-something from Michigan has qualifications to rank P5 jobs for the entire country based on 5 years experience in the blogosphere?

Entertaining to read, but, has no bearing on what would happen in a real coaching search.

Exactly, guy.

In the last five years this program has had a top 10 defense and a top 20 offense.

2012 shows this team can be double digit capability.

And that was before the ACC and facility improvements.

What would this guy have said about Baylor or TCU not so long ago.

I don't know I think he does a pretty good job of it, experience might be overrated here. I am not saying you cant win at Syracuse but its certainly tough. He states getting to a bowl game is tough and it certainly is. Most here pray for a bowl game, somehow being able to white knuckle our way to 6 wins

It ALL matters. There's no silver bullet.

We're never going to get top tier coaches, never. That doesn't mean we can't get very good coaches.

The only hindrance we have is getting somebody to move their family here.

Syracuse is an attractive job, for many reasons. And, it will be more attractive moving forward.

All this being said, I don't think we're looking at a coaching change at the top anytime soon.

I agree. Not sure I see what's glaringly wrong with this list. You could argue that the Rutgers mess should drop them down a tier, but overall it's pretty solid.

I think he would say that they are both in Texas and have Briles and Patterson as their head guys and move on. Syracuse finds one of those two, you should be OK. Patterson and Briles both look like they are going to remain loyal for some time as well to their respective universities. Patterson already has

Talent > Coaching in every sport if winning is the priority. Any good coach will admit to the same.

I'm not new to Syracuse fandom and have lived though Coach Mac > Shafer. I don't share your pessimism on "ever being that good again"... It's a tougher road than most of the rest of the P5, but it's not insurmountable.

IMO there aren't many coaches who can both recruit and scheme. Also I don't think SU can every be a winner with a guy coming from the recruiter mold. So we need a guy who can coach kids up. IMO Shafer fits more into the recruiter mold than schemer.

I don't think any job in the Northeast is a good job. There just isn't enough talent in the region. For SU we really shouldn't care though whether or not a B12 or P12 school is better. They are not our peers, which is the ACC. When you look at our conference I would say that Clemson, FSU, GA Tech, Louisville, Miami, VA Tech are all better jobs. I would say that BC, Duke, Wake are worse jobs. Pitt, NC State, UNC, UVA are all similar jobs.

Is it really going to be harder to win in the future in the ACC than it is now? I don't think the ACC is going to get more difficult for SU.

Well I'm not a big recruiting guy, but if Syracuse's best class ever is 9th or 10th in the ACC, that would say to me that yest it is going to get harder.

New stadium is key. Carrier Dome gave us 20yrs of football relevance... Hell, even Minnesota has gotten a boost from a new stadium.
