But the most shocking losses came at the top of the league when conference powers Michigan, No. 6 Michigan State and No. 7 Ohio State all toppled over.
The Spartans played a respectable game and could still find their way back to the College Football Playoff with a quality season — who knows. The Wolverines were shutout for the first time since 1984, which is probably not the way they wanted to end the final installment of their rivalry with No. 15 Notre Dame. Then in the school’s first-ever meeting with Virginia Tech, Ohio State flopped at home. It was Urban Meyer’s first loss at home as the Buckeyes head coach.
