Like Coach Marrone’s show, Coach Boeheim’s showis on locally at TK-99 FM but on Thursdays at 7PM, rather than 8PM on Wednesdays. Fans can call the show from 1-888-7GO-CUSE, (1-888-746-2873) or 315-424-TK99, (315-424-8599), or E-Mail the coach from the Radio Mailbox link on the front page of SU Athletics.com They are at the Delmonico’s Restaurant and you can ask questions there live.
My Questions/Comments
“Coach, Doug Marrone just endured a very disappointing end to the season. He announced in his post game press conference that he was going to begin preparing for next season the next morning. He appeared very stressed out, (as well he might be after a fifth straight loss), and it’s been suggested that he needs to step back and relax a bit before he gets back to the grind. You’ve had a few seasons that ended with disappointing slumps. It’s a different sport but is there any advise you could give Coach Marrone in dealing with his situation?”
HCJB
Coach described Florida as an “interesting” game” It’s not a good recipe for a victory to give up 9 three pointers and make only 3 yourself but we won it anyway….Marshall was a defensive game. Without the turnovers it would have gone down to the wire. We had 3-4 missed lay-ups and 2-3 guys didn’t play well. We are forcing turnovers but the defense can get better. We rebounded well until the Marshall game. But that’s pretty normal for this time of year. Coaches all over the country have a list of things they want their team to do better.”
They discussed the pace of the game and how teams want to slow it down vs. Syracuse. “When teams slow the game down it throws them off. We are used to it because so many teams try that against us.”
They talked about the great job Tommy Amaker is doing at Harvard- undefeated and nationally ranked at a school that’s never been much in basketball. “They’ve done a good job recruiting- good athletes, good students, good players. They would have been in the NCAA’s last year but they lost playoff to Princeton.”
They talked about NC State, who has “some of the principals from last year but they are better and we were lucky to beat them last year. They almost beat Stanford.”
Matt noted that Marshall had missed their first 16 three point attempts. JB: “We guarded them very well. Sometimes when you are guarded closely and then get an open shot you still hesitate. Then they loosened up and made some crazy shots.”
A Twitter question suggested that the problem on the fast break was that the guards have too much of a scorer’s mentality. JB said that our best guards- GMAC, the pearl, Sherman, Jonny, have had a scorer’s mentality and that’s not unusual. A guard who want’s to score is more likely to miss a shot or foul than have a turnover.
They practice transitions. They “just go” in scrimmages without having to take the ball in from out of bounds. They also have a 4 minute lay-up drill where you have to go the length of the court. Matt noted the long pass by Michael Carter-Williams. JB said he’s the best on the team at that Andy Rautins-style pass.
I hadn’t been able to get through because of technical difficulties with the local line so Matt read off my E-Mail. Jim said “Football is a little different. They are full bore into recruiting right now. Then they have to get prepared for spring. There will be time to relax then. Any coach that finishes a season on a bad note will be stressed out and upset. If it doesn’t hurt you shouldn’t have your position.”
JB reiterated his position that you can’t tell what plays a football coach should be calling unless you have his fund of knowledge. “The football staff is very competent. It’s all about execution. They stole a couple of games- Wake Forest and Toledo. During the West Virginia game they did everything perfectly. It’s the same in basketball. Every year you have one game where everything goes perfectly and you do everything right. If they’d won 6 or 7 games people would have said it wasn’t great but it was good enough. One extra loss hurt them.”
“It takes a long time to build up a football program. They’ve had two recruiting classes. They are putting together their third. Next year will be their fourth. You can’t turn it around that quickly unless you are Alabama. You are not going to get good players initially. Donovan McNabb didn‘t get a lot of offers. Nobody wanted Marvin Harrison. Joe Morris wasn’t highly recruited. We couldn’t get any McDonald’s All-Americas to even visit until Pearl Washington. The football staff is on track and doing the right things. Hopefully next year will be a solid year.
Matt Park brought up a discussion he had with Matt Roe about the best basketball players among those SU athletes who weren’t on the team. Roe said Rob Moore was the best basketball player not actually on the team in his day. JB: “He could jump out of the gym. Donovan McNabb was also very strong. He could have been a small forward.” (Like Paul Harris, perhaps?) they talked about which basketball players could have played football. Matt suggested Dion Waiters could. JB: “He might not like to get hit. Paul Harris had a good body for football but he didn’t like to get hit.”
They asked if I was OK since I hadn’t called in. (This is my equivalent of "Medic Alert".) I finally got through by using the 888 line and said I’d gotten a hold of Scott Pitoniak’s biography of Jim, (“Color Him Orange”), and noticed he actually seemed happy on the cover. I noted that I’d just been reading about Jimmy Lee and suggested that Jimmy had a skill that might help us with our fast breaks. Joel Mareiness described is as a “stop and pop”- a fast break where Jimmy would suddenly put on the breaks and drill a jump shot without having to go to the basket. The defenders would just fly by him, expecting him to go to the hoop. Do we have anybody on the current team who could do that? JB: “Jimmy was the best we’ve ever had from 15 feet- absolutely the best. He put us in the Final Four. Very few guys could do it today. It’s a lost art. Trevor Cooney could do it, maybe Brandon or Scoop. These days everyone wants to drive to the basket or put up a three.” Jim said he remembered one of his first scouting assignments was to see Jim play in high school at Whitney Point. “He made about 16 jumpers.”
“Jim in Central Square” wanted to know what would happen if Coach “just rolled the ball out there like Loyola Marymount in the old days”. JB said it would be like summer league games or NBA All-Star games, 150-135. “We would win some games but it’s not the best way to play. We’d have to play man to man to speed things up. It would be an interesting track meet but a dull basketball game without defense.”
Another caller asked about Scoop Jardine’s “good plays and bad”. JB: “I want you to really try and understand this. It’s not that he has that man turnovers, it’s just that some of his turnovers look bad. Dion and Brandon try to score but Scoop tries to make more plays. His assist to turnover ratio is actually pretty good.” Matt quoted the numbers: Scoop has 40 assists, 19 turnovers and also 19 steals. Dion has 27 assists, 12 turnovers and 18 steals. Brandon has 29 assists, 17 turnovers and 10 steals. Michael Carter Williams is also doing very well with 20 assists, 8 turnovers and 10 steals in limited action.
A caller asked about the progress of CJ Fair. “He’s been our most consistent player in his two years here. This was his first bad game. He missed a couple of shots, had one blocked and could never get going. He’s trying not to overdo things, which is what he should do.”
Jeff in Utica asked about having such a high early ranking when our national championship team was never ranked above #11. JB said he doesn’t really care about rankings. All they do is make sure everybody is prepared to play you. He added that you get to see your highlights on ESPN so everybody across the country can see them. He noted that the 2003 team was unranked to start with and said “Hopefully we can keep winning and keep our high ranking.”
Matt asked about George Washington. “They have some guys who can shoot but they’ve struggled in the last couple of games. They change up their defenses.”
They discussed the NBA. JB feels that the 66 game schedule will be enough to determine a proper champion, although there will be many back-to-back games and sometimes they will play three in a row.
Matt brought up the Albert Pujols contract. Its’ “crazy money. $254 million over ten years. He’ll have 2-3 really good years but over the last five years he’ll be 36-41 years old. That’s why they lock people out. They say ’we’re not making any money’. No kidding! Who did that?”
Next week, with the Marrone Show off until next year, they will resume their two hour format, with one hour on their full network and the second hour local.
