The coach’s show is on TK99, (FM 99.5) in the Syracuse area and can also be heard through Orange All-Access on the SU Athletic website. This year it’s 7PM Thursdays- or two days before each game, when they are not on Saturday. They have a link to their “Radio Mailbox” for submitting E-Mail questions on the SU Athletic website. You also can call in questions at 1-888-746-2873 or locally at 315-424-8599. You can also tweet them at hash tag CDMS. The show is broadcast from the Red Robin in Fayetteville.
It can take a while but pod casts of the show are eventually posted here:

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
“Coach, I again have to congratulate you and your staff on providing us with an exciting team to root for and hopefully more Central New York fans will take advantage of the opportunity to root for this team in person.
We are one of 19 FBS teams averaging 500 yards a game. Those 19 teams are averaging 43 points per game. We are averaging 33 points a game. We are averaging 10 points in the first half of games and 23 points in the second half of games. We have been behind at half-time at every game so far this year. We are a potent team but not yet an efficient one, and that makes us more vulnerable than we should be. What can we do to get off to better starts and take better advantage of the scoring opportunities that all those yards give us?”
COACH MARRONE
(I’ve re-arranged the order of some of the comments based on the subject.)
Coach said it was nice to see a lot of smiles on a lot of faces after finally winning a game vs. Stony brook. “The team is excited but we know we’ve got a lot of work to do. There are a lot of positives but we’ve to correct a lot of things.”
Dave in North Syracuse wondered if we could use our tight ends the way Bill Belichick does. Coach pointed out we’ve got only three of them- Becket Wales, David Stevens and Carl Cutler. Also, a lot depends of what the coverage dictates. Matt Park lauded Nick Provo for “stretching the field” last year. Coach said that Beckett Wales and David Stevens can also do that. “We have to have the right coverages and reads“. They are also “big in the red zone.”
I called in my question. “We’re working on getting better starts. We changed things in practice this week. We’ve changed practice schedules. We’ve talked to the players about their mindset. We know if we just keep doing what we are doing the results will be the same and we want to get better. We have to be more efficient. We left 20 points off the board vs. Stony Brook. I’ve been on both sides of the fence- I’ve been on all sides of the fence. I’ve been on teams that started well, on teams that played well at the end of games. Even though teams at the top of the list have quarters where they don’t score as much and nobody knows why. It helps to get a big play early like the screen pass to Gully. Then you’d like to follow it up with another one. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We can be much better.”
Matt said he knew that “there is no stone unturned by the staff” to fix this and that “it’s not a preparedness issue”. Coach: “You have to be efficient and consistent throughout. We‘ve made some costly mistakes in the last thee games. We have to learn from it and pull together as a team.” ” He noted that those other teams gaining 500 yards a game who averaged 43 points, “have not played Northwestern and USC”. (But they have gained 500 yards a game, just like we did and scored ore points doing it.) “We know who we are. We know what we have to do. We are excited about where we can take this.”
A later caller asked why we don’t use Adonis Ameen-Moore at the goal line and will he be red-shirted. Coach always begins any inquiry about why a player isn’t playing more with “He’s working really hard.” Coach: “Adonis is working really hard. We’ve been talking about getting him there in the red zone. We aren’t sure we can get through the season with three backs, We may need to use him.” (He’s behind a junior, a sophomore and a freshman.)
John in Baltimore asked about the goal line passing game. He recalled how Mike Williams used to win all the jump balls. Maybe something similar could be done with Ashton Broyld or even Terrell Hunt. Coach said that we’ve been trying to do the same thing with Marcus Sales and Jarrod West but he’s even more excited about the possibilities when Adrian Flemming comes back because he’s even taller than they are and has a higher vertical leap. He said that one of the problems in the Stony Brook game was that “on tape they always played man for man down near the goal line and so we ran man for man routes but they were playing zone in the game“. He also said that “teams cut down their offense in the red zone. Most teams have 6 ’concepts’ in the red zone. We have less than that. It’s all about execution and that’s hard work.” Later coach talked about “miscommunication in signals. Some players are wide. The sideline must function well.”
Coach said that he’s excited that “we should be at full strength for the first time this season when the conference schedule starts“. He mentioned getting both Justin Pugh and Adrian Flemming back. Matt said that fans can see who is making more of an impact in games but wanted to know who in practice is taking “small nuanced steps” in practice to get better. (When you are trying to impress the coaches you always want to do it in “nuanced” steps.) Coach: “A lot of players. We have plans for development for each starter, each back-up, even each member of the scout team. One thing we are excited about is Alec Lemon,. He was out for along time and played against Southern California without having practiced. He got three practices in last week and now has six. I was talking to the coaches and this is the most receivers we’ve had to throw to and it’s not even close.” Matt: “You’re not having to call plays to mitigate weaknesses.” Coach: “Most guys can play all three positions. This excites recruits. They can see themselves being more involved with this type of offense than the more conventional offense we were using before.”
Richard in North Syracuse, (there were a lot of calls from North Syracuse tonight), said he “Can’t wait to unleash SU football on the ACC schools like Florida State, Miami and Boston College.” Coach said he was excited about playing those teams, (although he doesn’t like Boston College mentioned since it’s his wife’s alma mater). He coached in that conference for 5 years, (at Georgia Tech, 1995-1999). He said he “had a history with those schools” wanted to “get them in the Dome and show them what the loud house is“ and added, “it will be extremely helpful in recruiting“.
Matt noted how Ashton Broyld was coming along and looks to be a major factor in the future for the team. Coach: “Ashton is working hard to get to that level. He can cut from the right to the left faster than anyone I’ve seen with along stride and at his size, if he can fall forward, it means 4 more yards for us. He’s a big guy.”
Dave in Queens noted the loss of John Raymon and asked if that precludes using Deon Goggins at end. Coach said that it doesn’t, although we’ve got good players at that position in Micah Robinson, Brandon Sharpe and Markus Pierce-Brewster. Jay Bromley “is a good player a lot of people haven’t mentioned”. Eric Crume hurt his shoulder but he’s getting healthy now. Zian Jones “has worked hard. When he came here he weighed 340 pounds. He’s down to 309. Davon Walls has been working hard. I’m happy with our rotation. We used to have players playing 70 plays a game and they’d wear down through the long season. Now we can rotate them.”
They talked about Brandon Reddish not being available for this game. Wayne Morgan, Julian Whigham and even Durell Eskridge could see some time in that spot. We may see Morgan back on kick returns. “We know they have talent. We are trying to work them in here and give them chances as they come along“.
They talked a lot about Minnesota, especially the quarterback situation. Coach: let’s define ‘back-up quarterback’. To me that’s a guy who hands it off. Max Shortell had 3TD passes. The first pass we saw on film was right over the head of a linebacker to the receiver. He’s a legit starter. He gave a lift to that team when he came in and that shows they believe in him. I remember when I was at Tennessee we were playing LSU for the SEC title with a shot at the national championship game possible. We knocked Rohan Davey out of the game and Matt Mauck came in and beat us.” Matt Park noted that Shortell was 6-6 and 240 and would be hard to bring down if we put some pressure on him. Coach: “We haven’t seen a lot of people around him. He can pick you apart.”
Matt noted that Minnesota had only suffered 5 sacks this season but that SU had only suffered 3 sacks. This precipitated a discussion of who should be blamed for sacks. “Every time you are doing well in sacks allowed, it’s all about the quarterback getting rid of the ball. When you have the most sacks, nobody complains about the quarterback holding onto the ball too long. It’s ’Fire the line coach!’ Left tackle is like playing corner. You can make 60 great plays and all they remember is a bad one. I‘ve played on an unselfish, team-oriented line and I‘ve coached them. I had to learn the culture of the defensive backs. The players have been great and the assistant coaches have really helped.” Matt said that “there isn‘t a lot of glory in the offensive line.“
Coach closed by saying that “It will be a test for the program on the road in a hostile environment. We have to maintain our level of focus and not get caught up in what’s going on. We haven’t been in a hostile environment since we went to West Virginia a couple of years ago.” That’s a statement they might find interesting in Cincinnati, New Brunswick, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Louisville, Storrs and Pittsburgh.
There’s no show next week due to the bye. The show prior to the Pittsburgh game will be on a Wednesday since the game is on a Friday.
It can take a while but pod casts of the show are eventually posted here:
