Every Thursday night of the football season at 7PM, Head Coach Scott Shafer does a call0in show with Matt Park on TK99, (99.5 FM) in Syracuse. To submit a question during the show, you can call 1-888-746-2873 or, locally 315-424-8599. You can send a question to Matt Park via Twitter at Matt Park 1. You can also send one in ahead of time with this link:

MY QUESTION

“Coach, there’s been a lot of discussion after the Penn State game about communication. Drew Allen complained that his receivers were not communicating with him or each other. There were also times when the offense was standing on the field looking to the sidelines for the next play. Last year the team did a great job of getting the plays in and getting them off quickly. The players seemed to perform better at the faster pace and the opposition seemed to get worse as they faced one play after another. I recall there was a card system being used last year. Is the same system in place this year?”

COACH SHAFER

Coach Shafer felt the defense played well and that “we got them out of their tight end situations”. We did very well on third down, stopping them 94% of the time. We also had four takeaways. Offensively “We have a goal of making 4 yards on first down to manage the sticks and take the pressure off a young offense”. (We did that 5 times in 22 plays.) He said that they’ve got to improve communications “from sidelines to quarterback to personnel groups. I thought we could hang with them until the fourth quarter. I didn’t want to put too much pressure on the newbies, (with a complicated game plan). I thought we had enough people to win the game. Drew Allen showed some good composure and gave us good information. He occasionally got flustered after a bad play but kept his poise. “He’s on it. He owns it. We didn’t help him with 5 drops and a couple of routes not run correctly. He’s self-critical and has a good demeanor.”

At this point I tried to call in my questions but TK99 was having its own communication problems.

Matt Park continued the conversation, asking Coach Shafer to contrast Penn State’s two quarterback situation to that of our next opponent, Northwestern. Coach said that it was a different situation because Penn State’s quarterbacks were similar but Northwestern’s are different. “It’s two types of game plans. We have been looking at film for formation tendencies. They have similar kids at the running back and wide receiver positions. You can’t tell which is which except on freeze frame”, the coach joked.

They talked about Ashton Broyld. Coach noted he had 5 touches and had “done a good job”. But he noted “a couple of plays that could have been really good gains.”

I finally got through with my question about communication and offensive tempo. The only thing Coach Shafer would say about the communication system was that there were “some similarities”. He attributed the communication problems to “First game, a quarterback who hasn’t started since high school, whereas last year we had a three year veteran quarterback.” Matt Park added that we had a first year head coach and play caller. Shafer agreed and said “The only way you can get better at playing the game is to play it.” He added that, even with the 3rd year quarterback, we had problems, spotting Northwestern a 21 point lead, (but that wasn’t because of the offense). He said I was “dead on” that “we need to continue to work on getting the bugs out.”

They talked about penalties. “The key is were they aggressive or something like lining up in the neutral zone. “

They talked about the defense. Coach praised Cam Lynch for having 10 tackles Marquis Spruill and Dyshawn Davis were “as expected”. The corners were “for the most part good…Robinson is a very talented kid”. Robert Welsh was the ACC defensive lineman of the week. Shafer said we needed him to come up big for us because “one guy was dismissed form the team and another tore an ACL”. (Who tore an ACL?). “We need to just keep on keeping.”

Coach said he was stressing the team concept and how “something that’s strong on one side and weak on another comes together”. We scored on 2 of 3 takeaways “which is our goal” and stopped Penn State from scoring off our turnovers so as a team, we won 83% of those situations. He also said we were “+4” comparing “our coverage teams to our return yards”. I assume he means that we got more good returns than Penn State did. Of course they got no return when we had the bad snap. “I put it as a team on each other to get the job done for their teammates.”

Matt asked how he is coaching players to avoid the new “targeting” rule. “By teaching. A coach is a teacher. The old technique was to hit high and hard and stay off the legs. Shoot your hands and keep your eyes to the sky to avoid getting hurt. The new technique is to tackle lower. We are trading concussions for more ACL in juries. I hope they don’t change the game from the one we played growing up. NFL rules tend to filter down to the colleges. The intent is good. Anything too far in either direction isn’t very healthy. “

They talked about the NFL . “A college coach doesn’t get much chance to see his former players play.” But he’s been in touch with Arthur Jones, (who I thought wasn’t playing), and Shamarko Thomas. He knows Justin Pugh and Ryan Nassib are very nervous right now. Matt Park noted that the Giants had released David Carr, clearing a path for Nassib to be retained as a back-up quarterback. “We’ve got some high character kids and the high character types have the longest careers in the NFL.”

They talked about going to Chicago and playing Northwestern at Ryan Field, which doubled for Archbold Stadium in the movie “The Express.” Coach said they’d used that movie for recruiting. He said Chicago was “A great second city, has great museums and zoos.” The coach and his family like to spend time at such places. (I’m trying to imagine Coach P at a museum.) Matt Park said that SU was doing some serious recruiting in that area. Coach said he wanted to get 3-4 kids a year from the Chicago area. He used to recruit there when he coached in the Midwest, especially at Northern Illinois. He said he likes the “south side kids. We had about 7 of them when we, (NIU), beat Alabama, (19-16 in 2003). We get the White Sox fans. We look at tape of players form there and they are playing again big, strong guys and that will get them ready for the ACC. ” He warned Matt not to use ketchup with his hot dogs in Chicago or he might get punched.

Shafer expects to have his hands full with the Northwestern offense but that the defense is anxious to get back on the field with them after what happened last year. “Cal ran 100 plays on them, (99 in a game that seems eerily familiar: http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?id=332430025 ), and we got a chance to see what was going on. Happiness is to have Game 1 over and now we are ready to go with the game plan for Northwestern. “

“The character element is the highest I’ve been around. The key is not to change. Pretty or ugly, win lose or draw.”

Steve you're a regular Michael Cohen without all the crappy reporting. Thank you for relaying all of this.

Thanks SWC. As usual you have it covered. I enjoy reading your recaps.

SWC, do you get a tax write off for doing this service or anything?

Or, gulp... is this part of some type of court mandated service?

Because it's sure appreciated, but man this must take some effort. Thanks again.

The "likes" and the "thanks" are nice but what's really good is to start a conversation about something. Does anybody have any comment on anything the coach said?

I thought the following was interesting:

- His goal is to make 4+ yards on first down. We did that 5 times in 22 first downs on Saturday.

- Ashton Broyld "did a good job" but "a couple plays could have been really good gains." A note of disappointment there.

- He attributed the communication problems to his quarterback's first games and a young offense. Matt had to add that it was Shafer and McDonald's first game int heir present positions as well.

- The corners were "for the most part, good". Faint praise

- He's satisfied with scoring on 2 of 3 takeaways in Penn State territory. We got 10 points. Is that really satisfactory?

- I realize the coaching staff is largely from the midwest. But should we be trying to recruit midwestern players for the ACC? Shouldn't our emphasis be on the Atlantic coast?

- Cal got off 99 plays, including 63 passes vs. Northwestern and got 549 yards and scored 30 points.. Last year we got off 95 plays, including 66 passes and gained 596 yards and scored 41 points. Against Penn State we got off 74 plays, 37 passes , =gained 260 yards and scored 17 points. If we are to do what Cal did, we've got to play at the pace we did last year- and go to the air as much as Cal and we did. That invovles a very different game plan than we saw last week and much greater efficiency in getting the plays in and off.

Should Big 10 and Big 12 schools recruit in Florida? I think it just depends on the kid and where he wants to play or possibly where he has family or is from originally. If the ACC (oh lord I sound like an SEC fan) can get some excitement going there is no reason why it shouldn't recruit the whole country, like in hoop.

Interesting he said corners after the busted coverage that's where he went. Maybe they didn't tackle well too?

I'd love to see Allen get into a good rhythm vs NW. The 2 Dome games have been crazy but the one Chicago game was pretty much all NW, it's going to be tough but at least our boys already have one road game :( under their belt.

Shafer said earlier the week that he expected a slug fest. I think there's a chicken and egg argument with that stuff. Do games become a slug fest and the coaches were right to predict that, or do games become slug fests because the coaches play that way thanks to their prediction?

I think we could have been a lot more aggressive on offense. We were content to sit on the ball to end the half only down a field goal, as one example. Well, in a game short on points, don't points become even more valuable?

I am "satisfied" with 10 pts off the takeaways. Could it and should it be better - definitely. The missed 42 yarder was a bummer and took away a little momentum.

I am fine with recruiting in the MW or anywhere else it is going to help the team. I think the success of the team will turn more heads regionally in the future. Marrone put an effort into making sure the staff is running clinics and building relationships with NYS HS coaches. I hope HCSS continues this effort.

"His goal is to make 4+ yards on first down. We did that 5 times in 22 first downs on Saturday."

Quickly looking through the play-by-play we couldn't even get it to 3rd and 5. Lots of 2 yard runs or no gain or penalties to set up 3rd and long.

Reading the play-by-play really makes you scratch your head as to what McDonald was thinking...

With ND sort of joining the ACC in football, recruiting the Chicago area makes a little more sense for us, especially if that's where the staff can bank on established relationships.

I really don't like the "first game" excuse regarding communication problems. This wasn't the first game of football that Drew Allen ever played (OK, it was his first start at the collegiate level, but he's been in a big time program the last 4 years) or the first time these coaches have been on a sideline or in a press box. Cal ran 99 plays against NU. Guess what? That was Sonny Dykes "first game" as the Cal HC and running 99 plays is certainly not indicative of any communication problems. Kliff Kingsbury's "first game" as an HC at Texas Tech didn't appear to suffer from 60 minutes of communication problems, even with a walk-on freshman starting at QB in his "first game."

I am 100% on the Shafer and McD bandwagon, but my biggest fear right now is that the offensive scheme/system is fundamentally broken. Of course I can't tell that from just one game, but we'll know more after Saturday. If it is broken, it's definitely fixable. Broyld's recent comments and last year's turn around provide a blueprint. Pare down the playbook and let your players make plays.

That's more like it. This board is all about having interesting discussions. :)

I expect we will see major improvement from McDonald/Allen over the course of September. Excuse is legit because Allen wasn't with the team in the Spring.

WE aren't really a "young" offense compared to PSU or many other college teams. But it makes a difference that your QB (who is a 5th year) is a newbie to this team and to these coaches.

One of the reasons given by Schaeffer for Allen getting the nod as starter was his experience during his time at Oklahoma. I don't think you can then turn around and say inexperience on his part was one of the reasons for communications breakdowns. If we see that again this weekend I will have Coach P-era trauma all over again. Those timeouts at the beginning of a half used to burn me up.

Nothing about special teams? Does that omission tell us anything?

Thanks for the transcript, great info there.

He also said we were “+4” comparing “our coverage teams to our return yards”.

There are four special teams matchups involving coverage (i.e, not including field goal kicking):
(1) Our KO vs Their KR; (2) Our KR vs Their KO; (3) Our Punt vs Their PR; (4) Our PR vs Their Punt.
Could he have some kind of scoring system that awards a point to the "winner" of each matchup? Then he'd be saying that we were better in all phases.

there are two things that leave to me to believe the answer is the latter

Number one, coach mentioned 3-4 different times and ways that a he thought it would be a "tough, close game that came down to the fourth quarter" and otherwise insinuated that we were outmatched physically and gave the impression he thought he only had a punchers chance

the thing that makes me think this is not an anomaly is how when he refers to recruiting he constantly refers to 2 and 3 star guys who maybe arent as talented but are "hard-nosed" and have great character and we can win more games that people think

i would rather hear him say, these are great athletes and great talents that arent getting noticed because they play in under covered areas or play for programs who are under the radar but are EVERY BIT AS TALENTED as the 4 and 5 star players and its our job to make sure they get the coaching and guidence to develop their natural talent

i am a little scared he really thinks our kids arent as good and our only chance is to "out tough" our opponents. i think we should be tough but there is mountains of evidence that measurables and noteriety dont equate to "talent" in many cases
